Position Summary
The Healthcare Utilization Review Coordinator (HURC) coordinates patient services across the continuum using the Relationship‑Based Care model. The HURC improves outcomes through shared leadership, evidence‑based practice, and Magnet’s Five Models of Care. The role supports patients, families, and colleagues in navigating the healthcare system and performs duties including utilization management, discharge planning, and referral. The coordinator fulfills unit and organizational goals.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Advocates for patients, families, and the nursing profession.
- Facilitates coordination of patient services with the patient, family, physicians, RNs, and interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, cost‑effective, timely care.
- Identifies variations in utilization of benefits with payors to fund alternative care plans where possible.
- Assists in identifying system problems impeding diagnosis or treatment, collaborates with interdisciplinary team to address delays in consults, treatments, discharge planning or procedures, facilitating timely delivery of services.
- Facilitates daily communication (patient rounds, multidisciplinary meetings) to discuss plan of care and expedite care across the continuum.
- Maintains expertise through continuing education and serves as a resource for care team members.
- Provides feedback to health care team on performance and practice.
- Collaborates with nurses and physicians to promote learning experiences for staff and students.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited professional nursing program.
- Registered Professional Nurse licensure in Illinois.
- Five years (60 months) of Medical Surgical experience.
- BSN or higher required.
- Current BLS/CPR and or unit‑specific certifications.
- 2 to 5 years of utilization review nurse experience.
- Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history.
Preferred Qualifications
- Nationally certified by ANCC or within 6 months of hire in a relevant clinical area.
