Sr. Technical Writer Job Description Fairwinds Technologies is a value‑added systems integrator of C4ISR technologies providing communications, networking and information technology solutions to the US DoD, Intelligence Community and Department of Homeland Security.
We are looking for a driven and detail‑oriented Sr. Technical Writer with the ability to create/update Electronic Technical Manuals (ETM) and Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETM) as well as to perform other technical writing functions. The successful candidate has previous experience in this field and is flexible and adaptable to rapidly changing situations. You must be extremely results driven.
Location: Remote with Travel
The Sr. Technical Writer must possess the skill to design and develop a complete technical and end‑user product documentation suite. Must have thorough knowledge of commercial off‑the‑shelf (COTS), government off‑the‑shelf (GOTS) and TRADOC requirements and writing structures.
Responsibilities
Interpret, author, and operate within confinement of Statement of Work (SOW), System Requirement Document (SRD) and the Verification Cross‑Reference Matrix (VCRM) to meet contractual requirements.
The developed product must be easily transferred into training materials, manuals, or web‑based documents for technical and non‑technical audiences.
Plan, design, implement and maintain computer‑based or web‑based training modules as required.
Assist in determinations of appropriate presentation methods, text content evaluation, edit material for style, layout, design, grammar, clarity, readability, and conformity to standards.
Participate in Technical Manual In‑Process Reviews (IPRs), technical manual validations, and verifications, required.
Record and maintain technical corrective actions (CRM).
Write, edit, and help with section updates to User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) copy.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be US Citizen.
Bachelors or higher degree in Education, Journalism, English, or equivalent degree field, from an accredited college or university, with eight (8) years or more experience.
Twelve (12) years of relevant experience, in lieu of a degree.
Experience using Arbortext | XML.
Technical Training/Writing experience with MIL‑STD‑45001‑1 (or current version), MIL‑HDBK‑1222, MIL‑STD‑3031/ASD, MIL‑PRF‑63002, MIL‑PRF‑63033, and DA PAM 25‑40.
Experience redlining technical manuals and making redline changes in IADS, will be making live updates and correcting all errors found in Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) or Extensible Markup Language (XML) instance and graphics prior to and during verification events.
Understanding of Electronic Technical Manual (ETM) and Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETM) and the differences between the two and how to convert from one to the other.
Understanding of MIL‑STD‑40051‑1D (or current) and TRADOC Regulation 350‑70.
Understanding of Government/TRADOC processes and procedures.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Works extremely well under tight deadlines.
Possess creative thinking skills.
Possess excellent time management skills.
Proficient with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, etc.
Additional Skills That Will Set You Apart
Government technical writing experience, highly preferred.
Proven ability to generate and update technical instructional material.
Previous government contracting preferred.
EPCO experience a plus.
Technical illustrator experience helpful.
Technical Writers certification a plus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a full‑time exempt position. 40‑hour+ work week.
Work Authorization/Security Clearance Must be eligible to work in the US. Must have an active Government security clearance of at least the Secret level.
