Library Assistant
Performs responsible public service and clerical tasks using standard technologies in the public library. Assists library patrons with collections, equipment, mobile devices, and online resources. Explains library policies to patrons and participates in programming, collection maintenance, and staff training opportunities. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the City Librarian. Performs circulation transactions, shelves materials, and assists patrons with basic information needs, including computer support and troubleshooting. Checks books and other materials in and out using the automated system. Collects fines, lost item payments, and other fees through the automated system. Processes new patron registrations. Assists patrons with computer and internet use, troubleshooting, and instructional programs. Shelves new and returned books and materials. Provides assistance with various media formats and mobile devices. Responds to basic information inquiries and makes appropriate referrals. Answers phone calls and handles inquiries efficiently. Participates in the library's opening and closing procedures. Maintains routine clerical accounting records. Maintains high-quality customer service standards. Manages the library's social media presence (e.g., Facebook, Twitter). Assists in training volunteers and oversees their scheduling and service quality. Oversees the PPLC/SPB holds process. Directs the library's participation in the ILL Navigator service. Participates in special projects, as assigned. Represents the library in PPLC Special Interest Groups, as appointed. Engages in professional development and staff training opportunities as appropriate. Performs other duties as required. High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Some college coursework preferred. Demonstrated advance proficiency with computers and mobile devices. Customer service experience preferred. Special Requirements
Emergency Response Status: As a condition of employment, City of St. Pete Beach employees may be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Familiarity with library policies, procedures, and practices. Working knowledge of the Library Management System, public computers, and related technologies. Proficiency with mobile devices, including e-readers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Ability to learn new library tasks and routines quickly. Competence in clerical and record-keeping tasks, including generating statistical and narrative reports. Ability to use office equipment and any new technologies introduced to the library. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, including city-mandated forms and training. Willingness to work flexible schedules, including nights and weekends. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and patrons. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing is necessary to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating a variety of equipment and technical devices, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions. Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
