Kentro is hiring a highly skilled Technical Writer to join our team and provide critical support to the Department of Commerce (DOC), Office of Cybersecurity & IT Risk Management (OCRM) in the creation and/or updating functional descriptions, system specifications, requirements documents, user guides, technical diagrams, interface control documents, system security documents and all technical documentation to accurately reflect the OCRM architecture, interfaces, and application functionality. Maintain the project document repository in SharePoint. Ensure SDLC documentation is created and maintained on a continuous basis.
Responsibilities
- Develop, edit, and maintain a wide range of technical documentation including functional descriptions, system specifications, requirements documents, user guides, interface control documents (ICDs), system security documentation, and other materials that accurately reflect the OCRM architecture, system interfaces, and application functionality.
- Collaborate with engineering, development, and project management teams to gather and validate technical information, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and consistency across all documentation.
- Create and update technical diagrams and visual materials (e.g., data flow diagrams, system architecture charts) to effectively communicate complex system relationships and functionality.
- Maintain the project document repository in SharePoint, ensuring proper version control, organization, and accessibility for all project stakeholders.
- Ensure all documentation complies with organizational standards, regulatory requirements, and security guidelines.
- Support the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) by developing and maintaining required documentation throughout all phases, including planning, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
- Review and edit technical documents authored by other contributors for consistency, accuracy, formatting, and completeness.
- Establish and maintain documentation templates, style guides, and standards to promote consistency across project deliverables.
- Participate in technical and project review meetings to stay current with system updates and ensure documentation remains aligned with evolving project requirements.
- Provide support for audits, reviews, and compliance assessments by ensuring documentation is complete, current, and traceable.
Location
100% On Site in Washington D.C.
Salary Range
$80,000-85,000 annually. Factors influencing pay within this range include geography, market demand, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communication, English, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field; equivalent professional experience may be considered.
- 4+ years of experience creating and maintaining technical documentation within a federal IT or government contracting environment.
- Demonstrated experience developing functional descriptions, system specifications, requirements documents, user guides, interface control documents (ICDs), and system security documentation for complex systems.
- Familiarity with federal documentation standards and compliance requirements (e.g., FISMA, NIST SP 800-series, RMF, or other DoD/agency‑specific frameworks).
- Proven ability to document and interpret system architectures, interfaces, and data flows across multiple environments.
- Proficiency with SharePoint for document management, version control, and collaborative editing in a secure environment.
- Working knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and related documentation deliverables for each phase.
- Strong understanding of configuration management and document control processes within federal programs.
- Skilled in technical diagramming and visualization tools to produce system and data flow diagrams.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills, with the ability to tailor technical content for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with federal clients, project managers, system engineers, and developers in a structured, compliance‑driven environment.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Clearance Requirement
- Active or ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.
