Position Summary
Staff Nurse I is accountable for patient care using the Nursing Process and Relationship‑Based Care model. The nurse provides direct care, improves outcomes through shared leadership, evidence‑based practice, and nursing excellence, and serves as an interdisciplinary team member delivering quality care and meeting unit and organizational goals.
Duties & Responsibilities
Completes required orientation program and unit‑specific competencies.
Develops, implements and updates the patient’s plan of care based on ongoing assessment and family input.
Shares information and collaborates with health‑care team members to promote effective patient care.
Verifies and implements orders from physicians, physician assistants, and/or advanced practice nurses, performs interventions as prescribed, and documents accurately in the electronic medical record.
Engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to develop an appropriate educational plan.
Recognizes symptoms, prioritizes care, and responds to patient’s changing needs.
Delegates tasks to support personnel per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides guidance and feedback.
Demonstrates commitment to UI Health’s values through teamwork and effective communication, aiming for quality outcomes, patient safety, customer satisfaction, and a clean, safe, therapeutic environment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Advocates for patients, families, community, and the nursing profession.
Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence‑based research, current standards, and clinical experience to provide quality patient care as measured by established nursing standards and accrediting bodies.
Utilizes the hospital‑approved acuity tool and electronic scheduling tool to facilitate optimal staffing, scheduling, and patient assignments.
Recognizes and supports Shared Leadership as the nursing governance method.
Participates in organizational, departmental, and shared‑leadership activities; supports unit goals in daily behavior.
Demonstrates accountability for job performance through continuous learning and maintaining licensure, BLS, and required unit‑specific certifications.
Assumes role of Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing resources and tools appropriately.
Provides and receives feedback regarding performance and practice from the health‑care team.
Adheres to UI Health’s Code of Conduct.
Treats patients, families, staff, students, and visitors with respect and dignity.
Adheres to nursing time, overtime, and attendance policies.
Completes electronic learning modules and related programs as assigned by UI Health by established dates.
Complies with University Health Services TB, flu, and fit‑testing requirements.
Uses established communication channels/chain of command to elicit or resolve patient‑care problems.
Identifies recurrent clinical practice and unit problems, participating in problem‑solving and resolution.
Collaborates with other nurses to identify, promote, and provide positive learning experiences for staff and students.
Serves as preceptor and/or resource to other nursing staff and students.
Accesses UI Health intranet/Outlook for communication and to review and interpret policy changes.
Supports nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts conducted on the unit and within UI Health.
Minimum Qualifications
Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit‑specific certifications.
Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships.
Intermediate computer skills with ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on‑the‑job training.
Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history.
One to two years of previous nursing experience.
