Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Music Education (or equivalent field). ABD will be considered.

Position Summary: The Music Education program in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music at the University of Georgia invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Music Education (string emphasis) for candidates demonstrating expertise in string pedagogy, instrumental music teacher education, and student teaching supervision. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible appointment starting August 1, 2026.

Responsibilities:

Teach string education courses

Assist in Instrumental Field Experience courses

Supervise student teachers in surrounding counties

Oversee teacher education in the String Project

Teach other courses as assigned within areas of expertise such as guitar, secondary general, and/or technology in music education

Actively contribute to the Hugh Hodgson School of Music and Music Education area

Other duties as assigned

Additional Requirements:

Candidates with a master’s degree in music education may be considered depending upon documented accomplishments and expertise beyond the minimum requirement for K-12 teaching, and must be approved for a terminal degree exception before hire.

A minimum of 3 years K-12 teaching experience.

Prior or active teaching certification in the United States.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification:

Certification (or seeking) in Suzuki and/or other relevant pedagogies are valued.

At least one year of experience in teaching secondary general music, guitar, or non-major general music courses.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Demonstrated expertise in college-level teaching.

Demonstrated expertise in string education pedagogy.

Demonstrated expertise in instrumental music teacher education.

Demonstrated expertise in student teaching supervision.

Demonstrated success in working with pre-service music teachers.

Clear research agenda and demonstrated success through publications/presentations.

Demonstrated background in working collaboratively and effectively with students and faculty.

Evidence of successful community partnerships and recruitment efforts.

Demonstrated commitment to fostering an environment that serves a community of students with a wide variety of majors, career paths, and backgrounds.
