Position: Library Paraprofessional

Job Summary: To support and maintain a well-organized and efficiently operated library environment that enables all patrons to fully utilize the available resources and services.

Immediate Supervisor: Building Principal and District Librarian

Evaluator: Building Principal or his/her designee with input from appropriate certified staff

Terms of Employment: Per the Professional Association of Support Staff Collective Bargaining Agreement

Qualifications:

A. Current state approved paraprofessional license and NCLB certificate.

B. Must be a high school graduate and pass the ETS Para Assessment or have an Associate Degree or 60 hours of college experience

C. Level of professionalism, such as proper handling of confidential information

D. Prior library or media center experience preferred

Duties:

Circulation & Catalog Management
  • Maintain and operate the library's circulation and catalog systems, ensuring accurate check-in/check-out of materials.
  • Update and manage patron records and process interlibrary loans.
  • Run regular reports for overdue and lost materials, communicating with the district librarian, staff and parents as needed.
  • Perform daily shelving of returned materials, ensuring proper placement and accessibility according to library standards.
  • Conduct annual inventory of all library holdings and provide collection reports requested.
Library Programming
  • Maintain and coordinate both a fixed and flex library schedule, including regular class visits for book exploration, read-alouds, and skill development as well as drop in as needed access and support.
  • Read aloud to students, listen to their reading, and support oral literacy activities.
  • Help students navigate library technology, participate in reading activities, and develop library skills.
  • Provide assistance to students and staff with locating materials and answering inquiries.
  • Support special programs such as book fairs, reading awards, and Family Reading Nights.
Collection Development & Maintenance
  • Assist the district librarian in selecting and purchasing new library materials.
  • Process and prepare new materials, including barcoding, labeling, cataloging, and covering books.
  • Repair damaged items and work with the district librarian to remove outdated or worn materials from the collection per district policy.
Library Environment
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming library space.
  • Create engaging displays that reflect current events, seasons, or curriculum topics.
  • Operate and care for library technology as directed by district librarian and principal.
  • Assist with the supervision of students in the library.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Collaborate regularly with the district librarian.
  • Communicate student needs or issues with classroom teachers and staff as appropriate.
  • Provide guidance to library parent and community volunteers, assigning tasks and ensuring effective support for daily library operations.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, lunch, assemblies, and other activities.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities as requested.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student and school information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the district librarian or building administrator.
Starting Pay: $18.00 per hour
