Title: Library Assistant II, Full-Time, Adult & Young Adult Department
Description
We are seeking a curious, community-oriented reader who will assist the Young Adult Librarian in achieving teen engagement goals, provide thoughtful reading/listening/viewing suggestions to teen and adult patrons, engage with the public by answering questions at the Reference Desk, and troubleshoot computer and/or digital services issues.
Essential Functions
- Promote resources and services to teens and their families through in-person engagement, email, and social media.
- Assist the Young Adult Librarian with developing, implementing, and staffing in-library programs, outreach programs, and passive programs for middle school and high school students.
- Assist the Young Adult Librarian in presenting readers’ advisory to teens in creative ways, such as decorated book displays, reading lists, bookmarks, website recommendations, and social media reels.
- Assist Adult & Young Adult department librarians with collection development and management projects, such as purchasing and weeding materials.
- Answer questions and phone calls at the Reference Desk regarding library materials, Teen & Adult events, readers’ advisory, building amenities, digital services, research, local resources, and more.
- Complete routine library tasks, such as searching for library materials, placing holds on materials for patrons, and organizing Young Adult & Adult collections.
- Coordinate and direct teen volunteers & interns to complete routine tasks, inventory, and creative service projects if the Young Adult Librarian is unavailable.
- Provide basic technology troubleshooting to patrons in computer use, web search, public printing, mobile printing, and using the library’s digital resources on personal devices.
- Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates.
Abilities, Skills, and Knowledge Required
- Possesses excellent customer service skills when communicating with the public; ability to use tact, courtesy and good judgement.
- Ability to demonstrate willingness to engage, support, and inspire teen library users.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of Young Adult library materials, both print and electronic.
- Knowledge of library amenities and the ability to provide information about library policies.
- Proficient skill with computers, the Internet, database searching, media literacy, Microsoft Office Systems or comparable program suite.
- Ability to communicate effectively and present ideas orally and in writing to patrons and staff.
- Ability to move carts and bins loaded with library materials.
- Ability to carry out tasks independently and work collaboratively with a team.
Education/Experience
Bachelor of Arts or Sciences degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Library work experience or experience working with the public is preferred.
Hours and Pay
40 hours per week; one night a week and every third weekend required. Starting salary $37,800.29. Health insurance plan, life insurance, Alabama State Employee’s Retirement System, 11 paid holidays, plus 3 personal days, 12 days of vacation per year.
