Description We’re seeking a highly experienced and visionary Creative Director for the Bloomsbury Adult Trade and Archer lists with over 10 years of success in book cover design across a wide range of fiction and nonfiction genres. This role leads the creative process from concept to completion, overseeing design strategy, and team management. The ideal candidate will have a strong eye for visual storytelling and deep knowledge of design trends, especially in the publishing space. Responsibilities include managing budgets and timelines, collaborating with freelance artists and internal teams, hiring and mentoring creative staff, and ensuring each cover captures the essence of the book while appealing to its target audience. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills are essential, along with the ability to thrive under pressure and collaborate with the team.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

10+ years experience in book-cover design with demonstrable success across a variety of fiction and nonfiction genres

Manage the creative process from concept to completion

Outstanding planning and organizational skills

Ability to oversee projects, budgets, and the creative department

Experience working with freelance designers, illustrators, and type designers to create book covers that both represent the book’s essence and attract the target audience

Hiring and training creative staff appropriate to our books

Review work, troubleshoot, and provide feedback to creatives

Manage and cultivate the career development of the designers

Analytical and problem‑solving skills

Strong Interpersonal skills

Calm under pressure and comfortable under uncertainty

Ability to empathize and collaborate with editors, authors, and creative members, giving productive direction

Ability to juggle multiple priorities, optimizing productivity

A solid understanding of the trends in visual design

Proven expertise in print and production techniques to enhance the visual impact of the book design and maximize its appeal in bookstores.

Excellent computer skills and design‑software skills

Requirements

Strong Mac skills with knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software, with strong emphasis in Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator

Proven ability to deliver timely, accurate work and demonstrate good follow‑up and follow‑through

BFA College degree or equivalent work experience in Graphic Design, Typography, and/or Illustration preferred

Detailed oriented with excellent organizational skills

Strong communication skills

Must have management experience

At least 10 years of art direction and design

Location Candidates must reside in the NY tri‑state area, and be able to work in person 2 days per week.
