Position Overview

Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University of California academic salary scales. A reasonable estimate for this position is $180,000-$205,000.

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: As soon as Spring 2026 (exact start date negotiable).

Position duration: Full‑time career appointment.

Position Description

Reporting to the University Librarian, the AUL for Administrative Services and Organizational Development is the senior administrator responsible for ensuring effective and efficient utilization of financial, facilities, security, and human resources of the UC Berkeley Library. The incumbent oversees the Library Human Resources Department, Library Business Services, Library Capital Projects & Facilities Management, and Library Security. The AUL coordinates the Library’s strategic planning, creates an organizational development program, and promotes a workplace that encourages learning, equity, and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Management, Leadership & Resource Allocation

The AUL’s time focuses on strategic management, leadership, and resource allocation, overseeing administrative organization and general library functions. Responsibilities include managerial leadership, strategic planning, budget and finance management, HR, labor relations, capital projects, and security. As a member of the Library Cabinet, the AUL acts as a subject matter expert, providing high‑level analysis and recommendations. The AUL participates in campus–wide committees, including the UC Berkeley Council of Chief Administrative Officers and the UC Libraries’ Administrative Services Advisory Group.

Culture Building and Organizational Development

The AUL cultivates a respectful, cohesive, and welcoming work culture across all Library units, fostering psychological safety, collaboration, and shared purpose. The AUL works with the Director of Human Resources on initiatives to promote fairness, belonging, and professional development. This includes mentorship programs, professional development opportunities, and recognition systems. The AUL assesses organizational climate through surveys, focus groups, and one‑on‑one conversations.

Fiscal Management

The AUL coordinates fiscal operations, supervises the Library’s Director of Finance & Business Services, and oversees budget planning and expenditures of approximately $62M annually. The AUL serves as the primary liaison with the campus Central Budget Office and other university centers.

Human Resources & Labor Relations

The AUL supervises the Library’s Director of Human Resources and manages all HR personnel actions, including recruitment, hiring, performance management, reclassification, promotions, and grievances for contract‑covered, PPSM, student, and academic employees.

Library Capital Projects & Facilities Management

The AUL oversees capital projects and facilities staff, managing over 1M square feet of roof space and more than 20 libraries on campus, and focusing on risk assessment and management.

Security

The AUL supervises the Library Security team, responsible for maintaining a safe environment for the public, academic community, staff, and collections.

Other Duties

Must complete mandatory trainings annually; may coordinate activities for other UC locations or external universities; perform managerial actions including performance reviews and time approvals; and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Advanced degree (such as Master’s, Ph.D., or equivalent international degree) by application date.

Additional Qualifications (required at time of start)

  • Three or more years of experience leading a team, including mentoring, supervising, and directing people.
  • Two or more years of experience leading and/or being responsible for a budget.
  • Five or more years of experience in libraries or archives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MLS/MSI from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent international degree.
  • Two or more years of experience with accounting, budgeting, and cost analysis; managing complex budgets and expenditures.
  • Strong understanding of library organization, culture, and operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate a complex, matrixed organization.
  • Demonstrated collaborative and partner‑building skills.
  • Strong user‑centered service focus.
  • Experience overseeing diverse teams.
  • Superior analytical, problem‑solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Project management and change‑management skills.
  • Effective fiscal management.
  • Long‑range planning and assessment experience.
  • Personnel management and team‑building skills, including goal setting, talent development, and constructive performance analysis.
  • Partnership building and stakeholder collaboration experience.
  • Knowledge of facilities management, space planning, and construction process.
  • Knowledge of collection storage management, resource sharing, and shared print programs.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement concepts and process improvement techniques.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse staff and stakeholders.
  • Experience working with a unionized workforce.
