Transportation Specialist I, II - Corpus Christi Central Design Office Position at the Texas Department of Transportation providing technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving design, construction projects, traffic operations, and highway maintenance in the Corpus Christi Central Design Office.

Essential Duties Transportation Specialist I

Assist with project assignments and determine work requirements to complete project plans and coordinate scheduling.

Assist with project design involving design calculations and sketches of plans, layouts, and typical sections.

Coordinate compilation of complete plan packages for submission to the responsible engineer or architect for review and signature.

Coordinate design work among TxDOT entities, consultants and contractors.

Coordinate with roadway design on schematics and review in‑house and consultant traffic control plans or traffic projects.

Coordinate with staff and/or area engineers regarding construction operations as they relate to contract administration, programming, planning, design, right‑of‑way and maintenance operations.

Evaluate and analyze design issues.

Perform data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments, and/or plan development.

Review and oversee plan packages submitted by consultants.

Review and revise Plans, Specifications & Estimates and project designs for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, roadway illumination, traffic management systems or Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

Train and make training‑related recommendations to staff on new operations.

Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.

Transportation Specialist II

Applicable laws, rules and regulations.

Research, analyze, and interpret policies and state and federal laws and regulations specific to functional area.

Minimum Qualifications Education Transportation Specialist I-II: Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline. Relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year–per–year basis.

Experience

Transportation Specialist I: 2 years transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience (full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent).

Transportation Specialist II: 4 years transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience (full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent).

Licenses and Certifications

Valid driver’s license (requires driving a state vehicle).

Mandatory Safety Impact Certificate, issued upon employment.

Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements.

Design and plan preparation methods and requirements.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

Conditions of Employment Standard Conditions of Employment (TxDOT). This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Position Information TxDOT’s Corpus Christi District is looking for a Transportation Specialist I or II to work out of our Central Design Office, located in Corpus Christi, TX. The office produces Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E) for project scopes that include preventive maintenance, rehabs, bridge replacements and freeway expansions. We are responsible for designing projects that meet current design standards, coordinating with all project owners and producing accurate PS&E.

Salary Ranges

Transportation Specialist I (B19): $48,244 – $76,028 annually.

Transportation Specialist II (B20): $51,158 – $81,351 annually.
