GE Aerospace Research – Coatings- Thermal Spray and Coating Design As a Fellow Intern at the GE Aerospace Research Polymers and Performance Coatings Laboratory, you will work closely and directly with the individuals who have a direct role in influencing and advancing the future of flight. Your project work will directly support researchers in the Thermal Spray Lab at GE Aerospace Research in their development of advanced surface solutions for the next generation of extreme environment‑facing turbine components. You will participate in process development research and establishing process‑property‑performance relationships for thermally sprayed coatings that have potential applicability in future jet aircraft.

Intern assignments are typically 12-14 weeks long; you will work side‑by‑side with experts in materials processing, property, and thermal spray processing of materials. The program includes seminars on cross‑center technology, soft skills development, and networking opportunities to showcase project accomplishments.

Required Qualifications

Current enrollment in a full‑time Ph.D. degree program in Materials Science, Engineering Science, or related disciplines at an ABET accredited university

Permanent legal authorization to work in the U.S. (U.S. persons only)

Willingness to work at the GE Aerospace Research site in Niskayuna, NY

Minimum GPA 3.0 / 4.0 scale

Desired Characteristics

Experience working with thermal spray equipment and processes

Working understanding of thermal spray coatings, microstructure formation, and their properties relative to bulk counterparts

Experience in metallographic specimen preparation techniques

Experience in microscopy methods (Optical minimum, SEM preferred)

Understanding of thermophysical property measurement techniques: Dilatometry, Laser Flash Analysis, DSC/DTA/TGA

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and large data analysis

Ability to communicate synthesized results in concise PowerPoint presentations

The pay range for this position is $1,000‑$2,000 USD weekly. GE provides travel reimbursement and a housing stipend for qualified interns.
