Technical Writer: Documentation Polish & Information Architecture (Contract)
About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
Overview
Anthropic is seeking a detail-oriented Technical Writer to join our team on a contract basis to help elevate the quality and usability of our developer documentation. You’ll be the person who makes sure our docs actually work for users—that they’re clear, well-organized, and genuinely helpful. You’ll hunt down confusing explanations, untangle messy information architecture, ensure consistency across our docs ecosystem, and transform technically correct but hard-to-understand content into documentation that developers actually enjoy using.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and rewrite existing documentation to improve clarity, readability, and user comprehension.
- Identify and fix information architecture issues—reorganize content so users can actually find what they need.
- Establish and maintain consistency in voice, style, and formatting across our documentation.
- Create and refine our style guide, templates, and documentation standards.
- Work through documentation backlogs to polish and update existing content.
- Conduct content audits to identify gaps, redundancies, and opportunities for improvement.
- Collaborate with technical writers and engineers to understand technical concepts well enough to explain them more clearly.
- Gather user feedback and identify patterns in where documentation falls short.
You may be a good fit if you have:
- 2-4 years of technical writing or content editing experience, ideally in developer-facing environments.
- A strong editorial eye and genuine passion for clear, user-centered writing.
- Experience with information architecture principles and content organization strategies.
- Comfort working with technical material (you don’t need to code, but you should be able to understand and clarify technical concepts).
- Familiarity with documentation tools like Markdown, Git, and content management systems.
- Strong attention to detail and consistency.
- The ability to work independently and manage your own priorities.
- A collaborative approach and willingness to work with subject matter experts.
Strong candidates may also have:
- Experience with API or developer documentation.
- Background in UX writing, content design, or information architecture.
- Familiarity with documentation site generators and static site tools.
- Experience conducting documentation usability testing or content audits.
- Knowledge of accessibility best practices for documentation.
What you can expect:
- Meaningful impact—your work will directly improve how thousands of developers experience our documentation.
- Collaboration with world‑class researchers and engineers who genuinely care about documentation quality.
- Opportunities to deepen your technical writing skills and learn about cutting‑edge AI technology through hands‑on work.
- Exposure to diverse documentation challenges across APIs, developer tools, and technical products.
- A supportive team environment where questions and knowledge‑sharing are encouraged.
- Competitive compensation.
- Remote work options available.
This is a six‑month contract position with the possibility of extension based on project needs and performance.
The expected base compensation for this position is $156,000 - $208,000 USD.
