Job Description
The Dallas Morning News is seeking an Assistant Sports Editor to provide editing support and leadership across the department and to plan the print product.
This editor will prepare stories for publication on multiple platforms, demonstrating an understanding of our print and digital audiences. This journalist will collaborate with editors on the Sports team to help plan and package useful features, spotlights, roundups and listings that engage and serve our North Texas audience and help optimize all content.
A strong candidate will have robust editing skills along with an understanding of and ambition for accountability journalism. This editor must be well-organized and have strong news judgment, and they must be confident in presenting story lineups. They must be a bridge-builder in creating relationships.
This manager will directly supervise reporters and/or producers on the sports team.
A strong communicator, collaborator and multitasker, the Assistant Sports Editor understands that planning is foundational to high-quality journalism and products, both for print and digital.

Responsibilities and duties:
- Edit staff copy for clarity, accuracy, structure and taste and spot potential libel
- Build stories with links, tags, SEO best practices, attractive web headlines and multimedia when appropriate
- Monitor analytics for stories and work with editors to suggest approaches for improvement
- Collaborate with Audience editors and our Photo team to improve the digital presentation of stories
- Work with editors to evolve and shape coverage to deepen engagement with our digital audience
- Provides day-to-day leadership and supervision to assigned staff, ensuring operational goals and objectives are met effectively and efficiently
- Responsible for all aspects of employee management, including recruitment, interviewing, selection, onboarding, and retention
- Conducts regular performance evaluations; provides constructive feedback and coaching to support employee development and accountability
- Administers progressive discipline and counseling as needed, in alignment with company policies and procedures
- Oversees scheduling, workload distribution, and delegation of responsibilities to ensure balanced team performance and productivity
Job requirements:
- Five years of experience in editing and/or copy editing
- Will work nights and weekends
- Strong line editor
- Deadline decision-maker
- Good news judgment, accuracy, speed, grammatical precision, a flair for headlines
- Proven ability to plan, work in advance and coordinate production
- Writes digital and print headlines that engage readers
- Writes photo captions that add value to digital or print presentation
- Edits graphics for accuracy and clarity
- Completes work by deadline
- Adapts quickly to changing technologies and workflows
- Juggles multiple assignments
- Communicates clearly and effectively with colleagues
- Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field
