About the role
We are seeking a meticulous and knowledgeable Style Editor to join our team on an hourly, contract basis. The ideal candidate will have a sharp eye for detail and specialized expertise in the nuances of Islamic and Arabic terminology within English text. This role is crucial for maintaining the quality, consistency, and scholarly integrity of our diverse editorial products, including research papers, blogs, and books. You'll be responsible for ensuring all content strictly adheres to our style guides, with a particular focus on the accurate application of diacritics and Arabic transliteration.
What you'll do
- Copyedit a variety of written materials for grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity, and adherence to Yaqeen's in-house style guide and the Chicago Manual of Style.
- Review and correct the use of diacritics and ensure the precise, consistent transliteration of Arabic terms according to established standards.
- Verify the accuracy of scriptural citations (Qur'an and Hadith) and other scholarly references.
- Collaborate with editors, writers, and researchers to clarify meaning and resolve editorial queries.
- Assist with other editorial review tasks as assigned to support the publications team.
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a copy editor or proofreader, preferably within an academic, publishing, or non‑profit environment.
- Expert knowledge of Arabic-to-English transliteration systems is required.
- Exceptional command of the English language and proficiency with the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS).
- Demonstrated experience working with diacritics and specialized characters.
- High level of attention to detail and the ability to work independently to meet deadlines.
- Familiarity with Islamic sciences, terminology, and concepts is a significant asset.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Assignment
Successful candidates who pass the first round of interviews may be asked to complete a relevant assignment to demonstrate their skill in reviewing and applying editorial style guidelines.
