Part Time Paid Staff Position Overview for Minister of Music

Requirements: The minister of music must have made a profession of faith, been baptized, and be a current member in good standing of a church. Additionally, they must agree to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000. This position requires skills in planning and leading music, knowledge of both old and newer hymns to gauge their accuracy, as well as having the ability to build and lead the choir and/or praise team.

Our vision is to be a church that worships through the congregational singing of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. We will sing songs that are biblically accurate, whether older or newer hymns and songs. Our congregation will both learn and worship as they joyfully sing songs with excellence.

Code Of Conduct

The Minister of Music is a part‑time, salaried position. He/She must have a sense of God’s calling to lead the music ministry and endeavor to bring excellence to the church’s worship of God. He/She will demonstrate the musical skills and knowledge required for this position, providing musical, promotional and spiritual support to all aspects of the music ministry. They will commit to be in attendance for every service, will not distract from but enhance the music ministry of the church, and will exhibit evidence of being called by God through their attendance and attitude, leading by example in stewardship and lifestyle.

Purpose

To set the tone of the service and bring the congregation into a spirit of worship and oneness with God through exciting, worshipful, and uplifting songs, hymns, and praise & worship.

Responsibilities

  • The Minister of Music is responsible for assisting the Pastor in planning and conducting a comprehensive music ministry through various selections of music that will seek to involve people of all age groups and musical tastes.
  • Be in attendance for Sunday School and all regularly scheduled worship services / special events of the church (Homecoming, Christmas Eve services, etc.). If you must miss a service/event due to a medical or family emergency, please notify the pastor and assistant as quickly as possible.
  • Oversee all aspects of the music ministry of the church—adults, youth, children’s choir, special groups or ensembles, special music, soloists, etc.
  • Direct all worship services in song, Sunday morning, evening, choir rehearsals, Easter and Christmas productions.
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to services and rehearsals to ensure any last‑minute changes or communications with the accompanists can be addressed, or ½ hour before services if a sound check is needed.
  • Encourage, equip and direct accompanists and AV team, they are accountable to you and serve under your direction.
  • Take part in scheduled meetings called by the pastor regarding the music ministry needs of the church.
  • Keep the music library clean and well organized.
  • Report any problems, as they arise, to the Pastor or Personnel Team.
  • Submit annual budget requests for the needs of the music ministry to the Music Ministry Team leader / Finance Team for consideration.
  • Submit all receipts for music purchases, credit card or cash reimbursement, to the church treasurer, signed and clearly marked for application to the music department budget.

General Information

Communication and commitment are key to ensuring we achieve our sole purpose—to honor and worship God in song. Please address any problems as they arise, with the Pastor and/or Personnel Team if needed.

The personnel team has enlisted the help of capable assistants for the Minister of Music, as well as the accompanists, in their absence. Currently, Daniel Reeves serves as assistant worship leader and Tanya Davis, assistant pianist. The purpose of having assistants is to have someone readily available and prepared to serve, to avoid any interruption in the normal flow of services or rehearsals. Assistants are accountable to the worship leader and will be held to the same code of conduct and expected to perform with the same quality of service as their predecessor.

This is a part‑time salaried position, paid weekly, with no paid vacation or benefits, with the exceptions as described in employee benefits. Any other personal time off would be at the discretion and approval of the pastor.

Currently there are 2 services per week, Sunday morning and Wednesday night. This schedule of services is subject to change with the needs of the church. In addition to the regular services, there are special events (Homecoming, Christmas Eve, etc.). You will be responsible for coordinating, with the Pastor, the order of service for each Sunday service. Occasionally regular services are cancelled because of holidays, bad weather, etc. These cancellations are at the discretion of the Pastor and Deacons.
