Purpose of the Role
At a time of dizzying change - in politics, technology and the economy - the BBC is committed to telling stories and reflecting perspectives far from the traditional centres of power. We’re seeking a senior US reporter - based in the South or Midwest - who can jump on major breaking news and deploy to the scene. We also want this reporter to write insightfully about the national stories of the day, covering the complex issues, characters and decisions transforming America.
Why Join the Team
Join one of the most trusted news brands in the US. The BBC offers independent, impartial journalism with global reach. This role is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced reporter with range, who can deliver crafted, impactful stories on the biggest news moments and trends that will resonate with audiences far beyond your patch. You will primarily write for the BBC News website and app, while also contributing across social media, broadcast and podcasts.
Your Key Responsibilities And Impact
- Cover the biggest national stories of the day, finding angles and reporting that offer unique insight and a wider perspective for our audience. You need to be as comfortable writing a lead news story as with filing for the live blog or delivering a smart end-of-day read infused with real voices
- Deploy to major breaking stories throughout the US and report across platforms. You will deliver crafted, dynamic dispatches from the scene and have the opportunity to report on TV, radio and podcast output
- Generate fresh ideas and angles on running stories and then land a well-crafted piece. This could be an on-the-ground story exploring the human impact of decisions made in Washington, or an authoritative explainer that gives audiences much-needed clarity
- Spot stories that will resonate with a broad BBC audience in the US and globally. This is not a local reporter role - it is an opportunity to find in unlikely places an intriguing tale that speaks to a bigger moment in modern America
- Collaborate with BBC teams across North America and around the world to explore current US themes through our unique global lens
Essential Criteria
- A track record of generating original ideas and delivering compelling stories around the national news agenda
- Exceptional writing and storytelling skills, including an ability to produce dynamic stories written with flair, colour and nuance to tight deadlines
- Experience covering breaking news at speed and deploying to the scene of major moving stories
- An understanding of the major social and policy issues driving rapid change across the US, and a track record of explaining the impact on Americans far from Washington
- A commitment to the BBC’s editorial values, including impartiality, and enthusiasm for strengthening our trusted position in the US market
If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
