Job Description Guardant Health is seeking a seasoned and strategic communications leader to serve as Senior Director, Executive & Leadership Communications. In this high‑impact role, you will serve as a
trusted advisor and strategist
to the Executive Leadership Team, with a focus on the co‑CEO. This leader will shape executive narratives that inspire internal audiences, drive external visibility, and reinforce Guardant’s leadership in precision oncology and health innovation.
This role is central to Guardant’s enterprise communications strategy—ensuring our executive voices are aligned, authentic, and influential across key audiences including employees, media, investors, industry stakeholders, and partners. You will partner closely with cross‑functional leaders to amplify our strategic priorities through compelling, consistent messaging that reflects our values, business goals, and scientific leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as lead strategist and primary writer for the co‑CEO and other executive leaders, crafting high‑impact communications that support corporate strategy, organizational change, and enterprise initiatives.
Develop and execute an integrated executive communications strategy that aligns leadership voice with Guardant’s business goals, cultural values, and external reputation objectives.
Provide real‑time strategic counsel to executives and communications partners on sensitive, high‑visibility communications needs (e.g., business transformations, leadership changes, crisis response).
Ensure executive communications remain aligned with corporate strategy and regulatory standards.
Position executive leaders as industry and innovation thought leaders by planning and preparing for high‑profile speaking engagements, panel appearances, and media interviews.
Partner with Investor Relations, Public Affairs, and Government Affairs teams to ensure executive visibility efforts support business objectives and reputation management.
Draft and place op‑eds, bylined articles, and social media content that reinforces Guardant’s differentiated perspective in the industry.
Build and maintain a proactive calendar of external and internal speaking engagements.
Leverage modern storytelling formats (video, social, digital, virtual town halls, podcasts, etc.) to enhance accessibility and engagement with executive communications.
Build and manage a long‑term executive engagement calendar to proactively plan communications around business milestones, thought leadership opportunities, and cultural moments.
Define and track metrics for executive communications effectiveness, using insights and feedback to continuously refine strategy and execution.
Collaborate cross‑functionally with Product, Marketing, Commercial, and People teams to shape narratives that elevate company‑wide priorities and achievements.
Serve as a storytelling integrator across internal and external channels, ensuring consistency of executive messages across platforms.
Partner with Internal Communications to cascade executive messages effectively across all levels of the organization, ensuring clarity, connection, and alignment.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field required; advanced degree preferred.
15+ years of experience in executive communications or strategic communications roles, with at least 5 years advising and writing for C‑level executives.
Prior experience in a fast‑paced, high‑growth environment such as biotech, diagnostics, healthcare technology, or life sciences strongly preferred.
Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills with a demonstrated ability to simplify complex topics for diverse audiences.
Strong strategic thinking and executive presence; trusted partner to senior leaders and comfortable handling confidential, high‑stakes matters.
Deep understanding of industry dynamics, public company communications, and regulatory considerations (e.g., earnings, M&A, crisis).
Ability to manage multiple workstreams in a dynamic, high‑pressure environment while maintaining impeccable attention to detail.
Experience managing direct reports and agency partners with a focus on talent development, collaboration, and results.
High emotional intelligence, sound judgment, and the ability to adapt communications style to suit different audiences and situations.
Proficiency with communications analytics tools, generative AI, and modern content platforms.
Hybrid Work Model This section is applicable to onsite employees who are eligible for hybrid work location as specified by management and related policies. Guardant has defined days for in‑person/onsite collaboration and work‑from‑home days for individual‑focused time. All U.S. employees who live within 50 miles of a Guardant facility will be required to be onsite on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. We have found aligning our scheduled in‑office days allows our teams to do the best work and creates the focused thinking time our innovative work requires. At Guardant, our work model has created flexibility for better work‑life balance while keeping teams connected to advance our science for our patients.
Compensation Primary Location: Palo Alto, CA – Base Pay Range: $235,600 – $323,950. Other U.S. location(s) – Base Pay Range: $200,300 – $275,350. If the role is performed in Colorado, the pay range for this job is: $212,000 – $291,600.
Employee may be required to lift routine office supplies and use office equipment. Majority of the work is performed in a desk/office environment; however, there may be exposure to high noise levels, fumes, and biohazard material in the laboratory environment. Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
