Responsibilities

Compile accurate and unbiased livestock, fruit, vegetable, and grain market information in accordance with USDA and South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) guidelines.

Collect data demonstrating knowledge of all factors affecting the livestock, fruit, vegetable, grain, honey, and organic markets.

Report factual data on supply, demand, trade activity, price trends, volume, and quotations by class, grade, and/or weight statewide.

Assist in the grading of livestock into a set pattern of size, weight, and quality.

Disseminate Market News reports to producers, trade members, media, and internet users.

Respond to information requests after completing research and interpreting relevant data.

Assemble and proof‑read data.

Record daily livestock, fruit, vegetable, and grain prices and futures data for the general public.

Attend relevant conferences and assist with planning and presenting outreach events.

Assist with SCDA’s Phillips Market Center events, including setup, takedown, and serving as point of contact during assigned events (including occasional nights and weekends).

Possess access to an agency vehicle for field work.

Requirements

High school diploma and experience with agricultural products, or a bachelor’s degree in agricultural studies may substitute for required work experience.

Valid state driver’s license and ability to operate a motorized vehicle.

Must obtain USDA Market Reporter Certification within six months of hire and meet any additional USDA requirements.

Must be able to perform duties in extreme heat/cold and endure long periods of standing/sitting.

General knowledge of agricultural economics principles in marketing of agricultural products.

Strong communication, math, writing, and keyboarding skills; use good judgment in framing price quotations.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with producers and processors of livestock, grain, and fruit/vegetables.

Requires writing, keyboarding, and language skills for composing reports, broadcasts, and summarizing statistical data.

Essential worker may be required on holidays, declared emergency days, and hazardous weather days.

Minimum 24‑hour advance notice required if employee is unable to attend shift.

Requires presence at the State Farmers Market in West Columbia when not assigned in the field (not a remote position).
