This is an in‑office role based in New York City that requires regular on‑site attendance four days a week, with some flexibility for remote work per departmental guidance.

Location: New York, NY – Department: Editing – Seniority level: Mid‑Senior – Employment type: Full‑time

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of reporters, including staffing decisions.
  • Generate ideas for news and enterprise for the desk and the newsroom.
  • Help determine the desk’s investigative coverage, assign and edit news and enterprise stories.
  • Identify topics and reporting avenues, advise on source relationships, vet documents and sources, overcome reporting roadblocks, and structure stories.
  • Coordinate with photo, graphic and data journalists in the National Desk, and with editors and reporters on other desks, the masthead, and The Times’s legal department.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our commitment to journalistic independence and the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • Report to the National Editor.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years as an editor focused on investigations.
  • Deep journalistic and management experience, with the ability to make sound, independent judgments about quality and process.
  • Experience leading coverage spanning subjects and desks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Digital media experience.
  • A willingness to be flexible as the newsroom’s needs evolve.

Annual base pay range: $180,000 – $210,000 USD.
