KNAU Arizona Public Radio, based at Northern Arizona University, is the NPR affiliate serving northern Arizona and the Colorado Plateau. About the Position

KNAU seeks a Radio Operations & Program Director to guide the sound, structure, and daily broadcast of northern Arizona’s award‑winning public radio station. The role oversees broadcast operations, ensures FCC compliance, manages programming and automation systems (WideOrbit), and serves as Chief Operator and potential on‑air host. The Director will work closely with the General Manager to shape the station’s on‑air sound and maintain audio technical quality.

Responsibilities

  • Broadcast Operations & Compliance (45%): oversee and coordinate daily station operations, maintain schedules and records, ensure compliance with FCC rules and university policies, serve as Chief Operator, advise senior management on operational changes, train staff, and provide on‑call technical support.
  • Programming (45%): manage WideOrbit to ensure seamless scheduling and broadcast continuity, maintain accurate program logs compliant with FCC rules, develop promotions, monitor network transmissions, liaise with outlying KNAU stations and NPR, coordinate content delivery from PRX and other sources.
  • On‑Air Hosting (5%): perform on‑air hosting duties (live and pre‑recorded) and participate in fundraising drives (essential).
  • Other Duties (5%): perform additional tasks as assigned (marginal).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting, Communications, or related field.
  • At least 1 year of management experience.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • A combination of related education, experience, and training may be considered equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with public radio.
