Communications Director
– Rohnert Park Headquarters, Sonoma County Library. 40 hours per week, full time.
Position Overview Under the direction of the Library Director, the Communications Director provides strategic oversight of the Library’s marketing and communications, including planning, writing, producing, and managing content for advertising, marketing, branding, promotions, public affairs, public relations, social media, and internal and external communications. The position supervises graphics and marketing staff and serves as the library’s spokesperson for media inquiries.
Responsibilities
Creates, updates, and administers a comprehensive marketing plan, regularly gathering community input and assessing needs in the service area.
Schedules, trains, supervises and evaluates professional and support staff.
Identifies services, resources, and programs for marketing and promotional opportunities; develops strategies and carries out a wide range of marketing activities.
Designs and conducts surveys and marketing/public opinion research to evaluate library services and programs.
Plans, writes, edits, proofreads and produces print and electronic publications such as newsletters and Library News; manages internal and external communications.
Manages the library brand, ensuring consistency in visual elements and written tone.
Oversees library social media policy and strategy, coordinating with authorized contributors across the organization.
Provides coaching, training, and support to staff who interact with the media; serves as liaison to public agencies and partnership organizations.
Participates in the Library’s Strategic Plan and collaborates on budget development and management.
Prepares written correspondence including reports, policies and memos.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
Integrated marketing, public affairs, and public relations strategies; market analysis and research techniques.
Branding principles and tactics across media and formats.
Media production, communication, and dissemination techniques including social media.
Modern library services and materials, as well as standard office and library equipment.
Fundamental principles and best practices in visual/graphic design.
Sound budgetary practices and department budget monitoring.
Fundamental principles and best practices in employee supervision.
Ability to:
Handle multiple work assignments, prioritize projects, and meet strict deadlines.
Recognize and define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Work under general supervision with latitude in exercising independent judgment to maximize efficient workflow.
Interact tactfully and courteously with customers, both internal and external.
Plan, organize, develop, and implement outreach coordination with staff, public officials, and community.
Engage audiences of all sizes, ages, and types through public speaking.
Identify marketing opportunities and produce content for marketing materials.
Apply specialized communication tools, including email, internet, and social media.
Demonstrate excellent analytical, organizational, project, and time management skills.
Develop, implement, and manage budgets and strategic plans, assessing outcomes.
Supervise the performance of contract marketing persons and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Approach tasks with flexibility, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s Degree preferred (marketing, communications, journalism, public information, or related field).
Experience: Minimum four years in internal/external marketing, communications, or public relations, with at least two years of supervisory experience.
Other: Valid California Driver’s License and ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings and weekends.
Compensation Salary range: $57.99 to $72.42 per hour, plus benefits.
