Class Definition
A Radio Dispatcher I ensures that passengers and materials are transported in a timely manner by establishing routes, scheduling vehicles and dispatching drivers by means of a two‑way base radio and the telephone. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees work a conventional workweek; some agencies require rotating shift to provide 24‑hour coverage. Work is performed in an office setting where the employee is not exposed to uncomfortable environmental or hazardous work conditions. Work requires moderate physical exertion.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possess a GED certificate.
Experience: Have two years experience in dispatching or driving vehicles.
Licenses/Registrations/Certificates: Some positions may require a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial or equivalent out‑of‑state driver’s license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of City Street locations.
Knowledge of basic Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations.
Ability to read maps.
Ability to develop efficient vehicle routes and schedules.
Ability to operate a two‑way base radio and related communications equipment.
Ability to speak clearly and concisely.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to maintain records.
Background Check
Eligible candidates under final consideration will be required to authorize the release of criminal conviction information.
Probation
All people selected for this position must complete a mandatory six‑month probation.
Eligibility
Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise for at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
Education Accreditation
Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained outside the U.S. must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency. Evaluation agency information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
Selection Process
All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination. Training and experience will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity.
Examination Process
Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to demonstrate qualification. Successful applicants will be placed on the employment Certified Eligible list for at least six months.
