TPWD – Geographic Information Specialist II (Texas Natural Diversity Database Manager)
Position enters, manages, queries, and disseminates geographic and tabular information on the rare, threatened, and endangered species of Texas for the purposes of informing and supporting conservation actions.
Under the supervision of the Texas Natural Diversity Database (TXNDD) Program Leader, responsibilities include:
Complex geographic information system work, including management of geospatial database tasks related to entry, quality control, and dissemination of threatened, endangered, and rare species information.
Resolution of record or mapping discrepancies through data research.
Compilation and conversion of data from external sources to usable formats.
Coordination with TPWD biologists regarding data for priority species.
Retrieval and analysis of relevant information using custom queries and GIS software.
Provision of technical assistance, support, and training for database applications and data interpretation.
Performing additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
Graduation with a bachelor's degree in Wildlife Biology, Geographic Information Systems, Wildlife Management, Geography, Ecology, or a related field.
Six months of experience managing biological/ecological data with GIS or a relational database, OR six months of experience collecting biological data in a field setting.
Valid Class “C” Texas driver’s license (must be obtained within 30 days of employment).
Acceptable Substitutions
A master’s degree in any of the above fields can substitute for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Wildlife Biology, GIS technology, Wildlife Management, Geography, Ecology, or related field.
Two years of experience as a professional biologist in an ecological discipline collecting field data.
Two years of experience managing ecological data with GIS or a relational database, OR one year of experience managing biological data using NatureServe Natural Heritage Methodology and a Biotics database.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of Texas Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) as identified in the Texas State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP).
Ability to work independently, use initiative, and exercise moderate latitude in decision‑making.
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills in GIS and database contexts.
