What You’ll Do
As Editor, you'll be the heartbeat of Model D, responsible for:
- Editorial Vision & Leadership: Shape coverage of Detroit's talent, innovation, and placemaking initiatives while maintaining IMG's solutions journalism approach
- Content Production: Publish regular compelling stories that connect Detroiters to their city's progress and potential and publish across web, newsletter and social channels.
- Community Engagement: Build authentic relationships with Detroit's diverse communities through regular listening sessions and strategic social media presence
- Team Management: Cultivate and coordinate a network of talented freelance writers and photographers who share your passion for Detroit
- Audience Growth: Develop and execute strategies to expand readership and deepen community engagement across digital platforms
The Ideal Candidate
- Is a Detroiter at heart - You know the city's neighborhoods, understand its challenges and opportunities, and can authentically connect with diverse communities
- Brings journalism expertise - You have proven experience in editorial roles, with strong writing, editing, and digital publishing skills
- Champions solutions journalism - You believe in the power of constructive, forward-looking reporting that highlights what's working
- Thinks entrepreneurially - You can manage budgets, coordinate freelancers, and work independently while meeting deadlines
- Connects naturally - You have existing relationships in Detroit's civic, business, and nonprofit communities, or can quickly build them
- Embraces digital innovation - You're comfortable with content management systems, social media strategies, and audience analytics
Key Qualifications
- Minimum 3-5 years of journalism/editorial experience
- Demonstrated connection to Detroit and its communities
- Experience managing freelance teams and editorial budgets
- Proficiency with digital publishing tools and social media platforms
- Strong project management and organizational skills
Compensation & Structure
- $2,500/month base contract for editing and publishing responsibilities
- Additional contractual compensation for original reporting
- Flexible, remote-friendly arrangement with expectation of regular presence in Detroit for community engagement
- Opportunity to shape one of Detroit's most influential media platforms
