SHERIFF'S OFFICE MEDIA SPECIALIST

Acceptable Experience and Education
Bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism, public relations, communications, or related field, and three (3) years professional experience in television news and/or public relations.
Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certificates and Licenses Required Must have or obtain by date of hire a valid driver's license applicable to job responsibilities, with a driving record acceptable to the County of El Paso.
In order to access the County’s network and systems, a personal mobile smart device is required by the hire start date.
Essential Duties
Provides quality audio/visual services that include capturing high‑quality photos and video ensuring all published materials (flyers, graphics, videos) for Sheriff’s Office events, press conferences, and community outreach activities following Sheriff’s Office branding, tone, and visual guidelines.
Provide multimedia and design support to internal units (e.g., Detention, Patrol, Community Services) for training and recruiting materials.
Participates in interviews for local news stations on videotape, telephone, radio, etc.; releases information to the media and responds to requests for interviews or information in a timely manner by phone, in person or in writing.
Assists in the development of procedures for releasing information when other public service agencies are involved in a mutual effort; ensures accuracy and sensitivity of information presented to the media.
As directed researches and develops articles, brochures, presentations, displays, reports, etc.
Assists in crisis situations within the agency.
Assists with the release of information concerning confidential agency investigations and operations, to include victims, witnesses and suspect information.
Coordinates training and guidance to departmental personnel regarding the release of information to include the prior criminal record, mug shot, character, and/or reputation of the accused.
Studies needs and effectiveness of public relations and community activities, and recommends improvements in practices to the director.
Collaborates with departments personnel to improve response times, streamline work processes and ensures quality of news coverage.
Participates in internal office policy and procedure development.
Prepares news releases and briefing materials, and translates all documents into Spanish as needed.
Prepares communications materials for internal and external audiences with approval from the director prior to release and distributes to the Sheriff’s Office. Assists in coordination of conferences, workshops, and special events. Researches inquiries and complaints, and provides status updates to the director.
Acts as a liaison with organizations, businesses, schools, special interest groups, media, attorneys, courts, etc.
Prepares and presents information for conferences, workshops, meetings, and events with director approval; designs and develops graphics for events, promotions, and informational topics.
Coordinates and conducts special outreach programs and promotions.
Conducts special studies, assessments, and projects.
Edit, produce and disseminates information for Internet and website communications, internal use and community education; maintain social media platforms for community engagement, respond to comments and messages in coordination with the Public Affairs director and elevate concerns as needed.
Other Important Duties Substitutes, if assigned, during temporary absences by performing delegated duties sufficient to maintain continuity of normal operations.
Commits self to providing excellent customer service and demonstrate commitment through cooperative team and individual efforts; and
Creates a high‑quality work culture through participation in and emphasis on training and mentoring to develop leadership, management, and technical skills in self and all employees, including safety related training and skills.
Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
Subject to be available for work related emergencies or communications issues.
As members of the County of El Paso Emergency Response System, all El Paso County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to train on emergency response and/or perform certain emergency services at the direction of their supervisor.
Summary of Position The Sheriff’s Office Media Specialist under general supervision develops and completes various multimedia tasks based on various Sheriff’s office departmental priorities and needs.
Minimum Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of:
Public relations and customer service techniques; correct English and Spanish usage, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary; techniques for effective interpersonal communications; modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment; proficient in Windows and Microsoft based products such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
Skill/Ability to:
Learn marketing and promotional methods and multitask, independently plan and complete assignments within deadlines; prepare news release and other materials; interact when directed with media and the public in an engaging and professional manner; interpret and analyze complex material, including technical information, rules, regulations, instructions, reports, charts, graphs, or tables; word processing and desktop publishing; work with and operate multiple types of publishing equipment; maintain high ethical standards; operate personal computer using standard office operating software and general office equipment; prepare and maintain records; maintain filing systems; communicate effectively in English and Spanish both orally and in writing; be dependable and self‑motivate; deal with the public courteously and effectively; work under stressful conditions, and establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted during the course of work; communicate effectively in public and make presentations in English and Spanish. Pass a Criminal Background Check; Bilingual (English-Spanish); May work non‑traditional hours as needed.

Work Environment Work is performed in an office setting with a moderate noise level and in outside environments with moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures. Travel, attendance at various meetings, and work outside normal business hours may be required.
