New Hanover County
New Hanover County Public Library is seeking a library director to lead the library system, continuing the momentum of its recent growth and shaping its future direction. The director will be a visionary and committed professional who will provide forward‑thinking leadership that continues to position the Library as an essential player in the educational and cultural life of the community.
Responsibilities
Provide leadership and vision, overall operations, and day‑to‑day management of the library system.
Direct and evaluate the work of 62 full‑time and part‑time staff members, including a library social worker, marketing and technology librarian, and a local history librarian who oversees a dedicated Local History Room and archival collections.
Oversee operations of four public library locations and the upcoming fifth facility scheduled to open in 2026.
Collaborate with the Library Advisory Board, Library Foundation, Friends of the Library group, and county staff to advance community programs, services, and capital projects.
Report to the Assistant County Manager.
Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited institution or a North Carolina regionally accredited Library and Information Science program.
Seven (7) years of progressively responsible library experience, including three (3) years of management level experience.
Must have or be eligible for NC Public Library Certification prior to appointment.
Strong commitment to equity, innovation, stewardship, and accountability.
Benefits & Other Information
Compensation: Salary range $101,198 – $172,036, determined by qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.
Salary and benefits administration and any adjustments are administered in accordance with County policies and practices.
Residency in New Hanover County may be required within six months of employment to ensure accessibility and active engagement within the community.
