Johnson City Public Library has an opening for a Teen Librarian. A staff member in this position plans and implements programs and develops the collection to engage teens and young adults in ways that reflect the Library’s mission and values. They provide information, research help, and readers’ advisory to teen and young adult users and ensure compliance with library policies and procedures. They provide guidance and support for library assistants and clerks, and they oversee the Library’s Teen Space when acting as the senior staff on duty. All work is evaluated through conferences and observations for soundness of judgment, innovation, and initiative in developing the assigned areas.

The Library is seeking an approachable and self-motivated person, someone who is outgoing with excellent interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and a working knowledge of library methods and trends. A person in this position is expected to provide and model quality customer service to teens and adults. They must have the ability to work effectively and courteously with the public, work independently and with a team under the direction of the Assistant Director of User Services. They must possess strong communication skills and think creatively.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides and models exceptional customer service
  • Plans, promotes, and implements engaging programs and events for teens and young adults
  • Develops the teen collection in alignment with the Collection Development Policy
  • Participates in outreach efforts and builds strong relationships with schools, youth organizations, and community partners to promote library services and resources
  • Provides direct service at the Teen Desk, including information assistance, readers’ advisory, and technology help
  • Ensures library policies and procedures are followed to maintain a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment
  • Engages in professional development to stay current with trends in teen services, literature, and technology
  • Performs other duties as assigned, independently and as part of a team

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of library science. Ability to plan, organize, and execute programs for teens and young adults. Ability to present ideas effectively, orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all library personnel and the public.

Desirable Experience and Education:

A master’s degree in library science or comparable combination of education and experience is required.

Physical Requirements:

Tasks may involve some physical effort, including standing and walking, frequent light lifting (5-10 pounds), or other restricted physical activities. Manual dexterity is needed in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of office equipment. This position involves extended periods of sitting at a computer. This position may require driving the library vehicle.

Environmental Requirements:

Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).

Sensory Requirements:

Task requires sound perception and discrimination. Task requires visual perception and discrimination. Task requires oral communications ability.

Hours:

Full-time, evening and weekend work is required

Classification and Compensation:

This is a 40-hour per week non-exempt position; $42,656 annual salary. Competitive benefits package includes paid vacation, sick, and holiday leave; medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as retirement benefits.
