Lieutenant - Departmental Promotion

Under direction, to direct coordinate and supervise departmental operations and investigative functions; prepare departmental reports; and do related work as required.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

• Supervises the operations and investigative activities of the sheriff’s Department.
• Maintains discipline and ensures that departmental rules and policies are followed.
• Takes charge of activities during a major emergency or in the event of a complex problem.
• Assigns details and follows up on progress.
• Reviews investigative or operational reports.
• Conducts briefings and training sessions.
• Supervises and participates in criminal investigations.
• Directs and participates in the questioning of witnesses, suspects or complainants.
• Makes reports and prepares documents for court processes.
• Prepares departmental financial and operational reports.
• Assists in departmental budget formation and prepares marine safety budget.
• Confers with superiors on matters relating to policies and procedures.
• Maintains functional responsibility over the department service functions.
• Serves as department head in the absence of superiors.

Knowledge of

Modern police methods and procedures, including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, basic investigation and identification techniques; criminal law with particular reference to apprehension, arrest and custody of persons accused of misdemeanors and felonies; rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and the preservation and presentation of evidence in criminal cases; recent court decisions on the arrest and handling of suspects and prisoners; principles of supervision and training.

Ability to

Schedule, organize and supervise the work of subordinates; analyze situations effectively and interpret and apply laws and regulations; demonstrate keen powers of observation and memory; exercise good judgment in personal encounters and relations with the general public; prepare clear, concise and comprehensive written reports; work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work.

Training and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from High School and two years experience performing duties equivalent to a Sheriff’s Sergeant. Possession of an appropriate California driver’s license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles may be required; possession of the Basic, Intermediate, and Supervisory certificate issued by the State Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission; and must be enrolled in the Peace Officers Standards and Training commission’s middle management training course within one year of appointment.
