Court Reporter/Voice Writer – Part Time
Superior Court of California – Contra Costa County
Salary: $50.77 – $58.78 per hour; base only; additional pay differentials may apply.
Job Location
County of Contra Costa, any court location.
Schedule & Time Commitment
Full eight‑hour work day; part‑time (.5 FTE) or greater. Minimum 40 hours every two weeks (5 full days over two weeks).
Responsibilities
- Attend court sessions as assigned and produce verbatim stenographic records.
- Provide immediate read‑back of all or portions of the record upon request.
- Prepare printed or magnetic media transcripts of court proceedings.
- Use computer‑aided or manual transcription to prepare transcripts in prescribed formats and deadlines.
- Review, certify and file printed transcripts; provide daily transcripts as needed.
- Be real‑time capable and provide real‑time services upon request.
- Provide, at own expense, all necessary equipment and materials pursuant to California Rules of Court, Rule 10.810.
- Maintain paper and electronic files.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED equivalency, or high school proficiency certificate.
- Valid California driver’s license.
- Current Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) certificate issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs Court Reporter Board.
- Operating system/equipment compatible with ACORN Notes Storage System.
Knowledge and Skills
- Legal terminology; basic medical and other specialized terminology required for court proceedings and protocol.
- Principles, practices, methods and techniques of shorthand reporting.
- Proper English usage, grammar, punctuation and spelling.
- Transcript production procedures and practices.
- State and local court rules, procedures and protocols.
Abilities
- Record shorthand at minimum 200 words per minute with 97.5% accuracy.
- Provide real‑time services upon request.
- Plan and organize work to meet deadlines.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with judges, court staff, attorneys and the public.
- Respond timely and appropriately to inquiries and requests.
- Maintain responsibility for providing court reporting and transcription equipment.
- Work independently as well as collaboratively.
- Comply with applicable court procedures.
Pay Differentials
- National Realtime Certification: 10% differential for a Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR). 7.5% for a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR). 3% for a Certified Realtime Captioner (CRC).
- State Realtime Certification: 5% differential for a California Certified Realtime Reporter (CCRR).
- Basic Readability: 5% differential for passing Court’s Realtime Basic Readability Test.
- Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART): $100 per full day, $50 per half day.
- Only the highest of these differentials applies (max 10% of base salary).
Highly Desirable Qualifications
- Communication Access Real‑time Translation (CART) certified.
- NCRA Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR).
- Registered Professional Reporter (RPR).
- Registered Merit Reporter (RMR).
- Real‑time capable and able to provide real‑time services upon request.
