The Teacher of the Visually Impaired provides itinerant-based direct services to students with visual impairments based on their individual IEP goals, including Braille and Nemeth instruction, assistive technology teaching, low vision aids training, curriculum adaptation, and family support. Basic computer skills are required. The candidate should be capable of creating engaging, relevant, and high-quality learning environments based on best practices for students with special needs. Formal Education
Bachelor's degree including instruction in functional vision evaluations and understanding of visual impairment implications on education. Essential Functions
Conduct vision assessments, evaluations, and re-evaluations, providing reports and setting goals aligned with IEPs. Deliver vision-related instruction and services tailored to each student’s needs. Collaborate with stakeholders, including students, parents, and staff, to support educational needs, coordinate programs, and deliver training. Ensure timely provision of accessible materials, adaptations, and equipment. Assess functional vision to determine how students use their vision in classroom tasks. Consult with teachers, parents, and staff regarding accommodations and needs. Provide training on adaptive equipment and teaching techniques for visual impairments. Interpret eye reports and collaborate with medical professionals. Participate in IEP meetings and maintain ongoing communication with parents. Preferred but not essential: Provide orientation and mobility training and consult on travel independence skills. Candidate Requirements
