Location: This position will be on-site full-time in Chicopee, MA. The position holder will need to be within commuting distance (within 45 min). CAD Designer Summary Performs a wide variety of duties to develop and produce detailed drawings, prints, and / or plans for tooling and equipment used in the manufacturing process. Duties include utilizing CAD system to produce models and prints, acting as a liaison with engineering and customer, maintaining hardcopy archives, files and other similar duties pertaining to the development of product prints/plans. The CAD Designer will assist the other members of the CAD team using their mechanical knowledge and experience in tooling design. They will be assigned to the CAD team and will work under the direction of the CAD Manager. Responsibilities Develops detailed tooling and / or equipment design drawings. Works from concept sketches / drawings, samples and / or R&D plans. Produces detailed prints of required tooling / equipment down to component levels. Produces drawings for tooling changes or modifications from engineering change requests. Downloads / uploads electronic files and forwards them to the customers or vendors. Develops prints for company facilities layouts, machine layouts, floor plans, etc. Acts as a working liaison with project engineers, R&D personnel, set‑up technicians, customers, etc. and discusses product details and requirements related to tooling / equipment design. Communicates directly with external customers to review tooling designs collaboratively with engineering or upper management. Designs new tooling and fixtures for modifications to existing tooling as required by product modifications, process changes, manufacturing problems, etc. Reviews process problems, engineering changes, product modifications, product performance requirements, etc. and reviews with appropriate project personnel. Issues purchase orders to vendors and follows progress until the completion of the project. Designs and presents advanced tooling models for production and R&D needs. Designs and presents turntables, shuttles, advanced fixtures, etc. for production and R&D needs. Provides training and guidance to the CAD Designers with regards to the designs of tooling / equipment. Supervises other CAD team members during group design efforts. Delegates and distributes tasks to best complete assignment. Communicates with vendors directly regarding design machinability and feasibility. Makes high level decisions regarding tooling design to best meet customer tooling requests. Meets with the CAD Manager and other Senior CAD Designers to discuss new standards, methods, technology, and procedures to ensure department continues to learn and grow. Assists Engineering on layout work for quotes and / or cost reductions, when appropriate. Presents advanced tooling & equipment in internal and external design reviews. Qualifications Associate degree in mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technologies, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. 5+ years of experience in mechanical design. Proficiency with SolidWorks. Experience interpreting CAD and SolidWorks designs. Must work well in a team environment and be able to effectively communicate both orally and written with fellow employees, supervisors, customers, and managers. Good understanding of production processing. Demonstrated ability to create and understand product and tooling prints. Demonstrated ability to effectively train less experienced CAD Designers to UFP design standards. Demonstrated ability to lead CAD team members on group and/or collaborative design efforts. Demonstrated ability to supervise CAD team members to best utilize resources to complete a design project promptly and efficiently.
