Responsibilities
- Help identify and execute a coverage plan around the weather story of the day, whether it’s a hurricane making landfall, an expansion of a drought, or a compelling visual for the audience.
- Serve as point of contact for the CNN Weather team at times, with no supervision.
- Handle complex reporting, editing, and alerting news to the broader CNN network.
- Assign and edit stories in the breaking‑news space, including urgent, rapidly updating digital coverage of extreme weather.
- Write and edit in formats beyond the traditional article: short‑format storytelling, visualizations, video scripts, and social‑media posts.
- Develop and execute distinctive story ideas and angles around complex topics.
- Collaborate with photo editors, video producers, and designers to help audiences understand the impact of extreme weather and climate change.
- Ensure stories and videos are accurate and fair before distribution to millions worldwide.
Qualifications & Experience
- At least 8 years of digital editorial experience in extreme weather or climate; a degree in meteorology, climate science or a related field preferred (not required).
- Ability to maintain a flexible schedule depending on major weather events.
- Experience handling complex news or topics without supervision.
- Passion for weather, climate and science and deep knowledge of U.S. weather.
- Proven track record writing and editing fast‑moving breaking news; excellent weather and climate news judgment.
- Strong pitching and headline instincts that help audiences connect with the news.
- Experience helping reporters, producers and meteorologists frame stories for a national audience.
- Some experience with weather data and visualizations.
- Perfect grasp of written and spoken English.
- Exceptional communication and organizational skills.
- A college degree or equivalent.

Compensation
Pay range: $78,540.00 – $145,860.00 per year. Additional rewards may include bonuses, incentives, and program‑specific awards.
