Communications Officer (Contract)
City of Colonial Heights is hiring a Communications Officer for its Emergency Communications Center (Fire & EMS). The role involves dispatching 9‑1‑1 emergencies, providing customer service, maintaining CAD system, and ensuring accurate data capture. Must be available for 12‑hour shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, on‑call, and overtime. Prior certifications such as DCJS Basic Dispatch, VCIN/NCIC Level A, EMD, CPR/AED, and 911 experience are desirable.
Salary & Position Annual salary: $46,577 (prior experience may influence final offer). Employment type: Full‑time contract.
Responsibilities
Serve as primary point of contact for all 9‑1‑1 and non‑emergency calls in the city.
Represent the City and Department professionally with high customer‑service standards.
Provide information or directions to callers, police, fire & rescue/EMS and other public‑safety agencies following policies and procedures.
Operate sophisticated workstation: multiple computer systems, GIS, CAD, etc., to triage and process calls.
Establish communications with callers during life‑threatening emergencies, provide safety instructions, and maintain contact until units arrive.
Accurately capture and enter information into CAD and statewide/national databases.
Communicate effectively with hearing‑impaired callers via TTY.
Perform clerical duties and other assigned tasks.
Qualifications
At least 18 years old.
High school diploma or equivalent with at least 3 years of experience.
U.S. citizen.
No felony convictions.
Typing speed 40 wpm.
Clear speaking/ability to hear and make quick decisions under stress.
Must possess or obtain VCIN/NCIC Level A, EMD, CPR/AED certifications and maintain them throughout employment.
Ability to work 12‑hour shifts and night/weekend/holidays/on‑call/overtime schedule.
Physical Demands & Work Environment Work in an office setting, sitting most of the time, occasional walking, standing, stooping, and carrying light items. No special physical demands.
