Music Therapist (PD)

As a member of the Hospice Interdisciplinary Team, the primary focus is to provide music therapy services to hospice patients and their families in accordance with the interdisciplinary plan of care. The music therapist assesses patients/families, devises a treatment plan, and implements the treatment plan. Music Therapists also support special programming, education, and marketing efforts to promote the agency’s mission.

What you will do

  • Educates hospice staff members on the appropriate use of the music therapy program and encourages referrals from all IDG Team Members
  • Responsible for the orientation, supervision, and coordination of music therapy interns and pre-internship students when assigned, as per AMTA guidelines.
  • Completes an initial music therapy assessment for patients/families referred and develops a plan of care based on the initial assessment.
  • Completes routine assessments and provides music therapy sessions in accordance with the plan of care.
  • Uses music therapy to treat a variety of medical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, and social needs of patients/families in an individualized, age‑appropriate manner, with music that is consistent with patient/family cultures, religions, and values.
  • Attends and participates in weekly IDG care planning meetings and contributes to the music therapist’s perspective of the needs of patients/families while educating team members about the clinical use of music therapy in meeting care plan needs.
  • Initiates music therapy care plans and updates every two weeks or as changes occur.
  • Evaluates the appropriateness and effectiveness of music therapy for patients and family members.
  • Responsible for reviewing, authorizing, and submitting accurate documentation for interns, students, and pre‑internship students.

Skills we are looking for

  • Ability to work both independently and within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Soothing singing voice, guitar and piano proficiency, and knowledge of other recreational instruments.
  • Knowledge of musical genres from birth to geriatrics and appropriate treatment techniques based on developmental stages and clinical needs.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Good management and organizational skills to coordinate music therapy census.
  • Bilingual is a plus!

Work Environment

  • Has reliable transportation to the patient’s home or place of residence.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to carry up to twenty‑five pounds of supplies and/or materials.
  • Routine duties involve the potential for direct exposure to blood or body fluids.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed.

Education & Experience

  • Completion of an American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) approved academic training from an AMTA‑accredited university or its equivalency.
  • Is a current professional member of the AMTA, or will join upon hire.
  • Holds a Master’s degree in Music Therapy or equivalent.
  • Holds Board certification in Music Therapy (MT‑BC) and maintains certification in compliance with the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT).
  • Holds a current NYS License in Creative Arts Therapies (LCAT), is practicing under an LCAT permit (LCAT‑P) with an approved agency supervisor, has applied for an LCAT permit or is LCAT eligible.
  • A minimum of two years of music therapy experience, preferably working in Hospice or health care related or the equivalent of a six‑month music therapy internship in the Hospice or health care field.
  • Experience with terminally ill patients is preferred.

Hours

  • 8:30am-4:30pm
  • 6 shifts per month (2 weekend shifts if needed)
  • 1 holiday (if needed)

Pay

$28-30/hr
