Definition

Photographs human cadavers and specimens and assists in the performance of autopsies on human cadavers.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the performance of autopsies on human cadavers.
  • Prepare specified human cadaver, specimen, or organ (e.g., liver or brain) for photograph and use in medical training and research.
  • Monitor and maintain autopsy log, reports, and other documentation, including negative pressure, photographic files, cry temperature, waste disposal, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Maintain inventory of all supplies and safety equipment used during the autopsy.
  • Select standard camera and artificial light source settings by referencing photographic manuals to ensure correct exposure.
  • Forward photographs/transparencies to the ordering pathologist for analysis.
  • Utilize handheld or stand‑mounted digital camera to produce quality, accurate images in accordance with standard procedure.
  • Photograph human cadavers, specimens, and organs when requested, following standard technique for orientation, location, and distance.
  • Adjust camera and light settings to maintain quality photographs and transparencies.
  • Inspect photographs/transparencies for deficiencies such as overexposure or image cutoff, and re‑photograph if necessary.

Selection Requirements

Six months’ experience assisting in the performance of autopsies at the level of the Los Angeles County Autopsy Technician and training in black and white, color, and digital camera techniques.

Physical Class III – Moderate

This class requires the incumbent to stand or walk most of the time and may involve bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10–25 pounds.

Desirable Qualifications

Additional credit will be awarded to applicants who have experience in excess of the selection requirements.

Special Requirement Information

Autopsy Technician level experience in Los Angeles County is defined as assisting in the performance of autopsies on human cadavers.

Eligibility Information

Applications are processed on an as‑received basis. A passing score of 70% or higher is required. The examination is 100% weighted to experience-based evaluation. No person may compete more than once every 12 months.
