Systems Engineer - Radio Engineer #47344

We are looking for a systems engineer who will manage a Motorola 800/700 MHz trunked public safety radio system serving over 5,000 users in the Information Technology’s Unified Communications Division. The ideal candidate will supervise vendors and radio depot operations, ensure compliance with FCC, FAA, and SHA regulations, and maintain required FCC licenses.

  • Execute tests and understand station antenna patterns.
  • Design detailed network layouts, specifications, and architectural plans for radio services.
  • Create system documentation and floor plans for networks and systems.
  • Design, install, manage, and troubleshoot radio systems and networks.
  • Maintain knowledge of antenna systems and related components such as combiners, multi‑couplers, coaxial cabling, and transceivers.
  • Use proper tools to perform measurements of radio system infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot complex radio issues.
  • Determine, test, and validate configurations for routers and Ethernet switches in production.
  • Recommend and assist in implementing plans that improve technical operations and compliance.
  • Participate in projects with other teams to confirm delivery intervals, validate milestones, and keep services on target.
  • Support deployments of new systems, applications, and architectures with installation, configuration, integration, evaluation, testing, documentation, and training.
  • Create design documentation using Microsoft Visio and PowerPoint.
  • Proactively identify process improvements and recommend them to management.
  • Share technical knowledge and skills with team members to develop capabilities.

This position offers a remote/hybrid work schedule arrangement within the Virginia and North Carolina surrounding area.

Qualifications

  • CJIS certification is required.
  • Willingness to pass a background check.
  • U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident who is eligible for naturalization.
  • Residing in the Virginia or North Carolina surrounding area for the remote/hybrid arrangement.
  • Depending on assignment, a Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) background clearance may be required prior to employment and annually thereafter.

**This position supports the City’s Public Safety departments and may involve physical access to public safety facilities and/or sensitive databases.**
