Position Overview
Arts for Learning Maryland seeks a passionate, experienced teaching artist—specializing in theater, music, visual arts, or dance—to serve as a Resident Teaching Artist embedded within one of our community school partner sites.
This full-time (32 hours/week) staff role is school-based and involves co-planning and co-teaching arts-integrated lessons with classroom teachers, supporting the school’s arts-integration strategy, and fostering deep engagement with students, families, and educators. This position also serves as the school’s Arts Integration Coach.
During the summer, the Resident Teaching Artist will work as a coach or teaching artist within the Summer Arts & Learning Academy (SALA). Additional responsibilities include supporting school community events and leading one weekly after-school or studio class.
This position will report to the Director of Arts Integration and begin with a 6 month probationary (pilot) period. Position funding is anticipated for 2.5 years, with the possibility of ending at that time.
Key Responsibilities
- Co-plan and co-teach arts-integrated lessons with core subject teachers.
- Serve as the school’s Arts Integration Coach, supporting educators in embedding arts practices into instruction.
- Collaborate with school leaders, improvement teams, and community school coordinators to develop and implement an arts-centered strategy supporting academic growth, student wholeness, and family engagement.
- Facilitate family engagement events (e.g., arts nights, showcases).
- Facilitate professional development sessions for teachers.
- Lead one weekly after-school class or studio class based on school needs.
- Support student- and community-centered initiatives as determined by the principal.
- Participate in SALA during the summer as a coach or teaching artist.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- 5+ years of experience as a teaching artist or certified fine arts teacher, and an active artistic practice.
- Demonstrated experience with arts integration and co-teaching models; experience within an A4L program preferred.
- Strong ability to build collaborative, trust-based relationships with administrators, educators, students, and fellow artists.
- Commitment to centering equity, social justice, and anti-racist practices in arts education.
- Experience working with diverse student and community populations, including people from varied racial, ethnic, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Compensation:
