The Director of Global Communications will lead the development and execution of global media strategies, serve as an on‑record spokesperson, and provide strategic counsel to senior leadership, while maintaining strong relationships with top‑tier U.S. and international media. This role supports the D.C.–based CEO and Policy & Advocacy teams to enhance media advocacy around U.S. foreign assistance and global humanitarian issues. Essential Responsibilities

Co‑lead the creation and implementation of Mercy Corps’ global communications strategy to raise visibility, influence, and affinity across target audiences. Collaborate with the Senior Director of Communications to align media strategy with organizational goals. Serve as a strategic advisor to senior leaders, ensuring consistent, compelling messaging that advances Mercy Corps’ mission and drives philanthropic growth. Develop engagement strategies across evolving influence landscapes, including generative AI and new digital storytelling formats. Partner with donor engagement, marketing, fundraising, programmatic, policy, and operational teams to advance fundraising, advocacy, marketing, and mission goals. Support issue management and crisis communications in partnership with the Senior Director of Communications. Respond quickly to current events with urgency and insight. Build and sustain strong relationships with top‑tier U.S. and international journalists and outlets. Conceptualize and advance thought leadership initiatives for executives, experts, and research. Prepare and coach senior leaders for media interviews, including high‑visibility engagements. Align media strategies with advocacy priorities through collaboration with the Policy and Advocacy team. Participate in fostering a collaborative, inclusive, high‑performing global team culture. Minimum Qualifications & Transferable Skills

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field. 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in communications, media relations, or journalism with geographically dispersed teams. Proven relationships with top‑tier U.S. and international media outlets and high‑impact press coverage. Experience as on‑record spokesperson for senior executives or organizations in high‑visibility contexts. Ability to translate complex information into clear, compelling stories for donors, policymakers, and public audiences. Understanding of global media and influence landscape, including journalism, digital content, and emerging technologies. Commitment to ethical storytelling practices that center dignity and community voice. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including executive communications and thought leadership pieces. Strong editorial judgment and instinct for timely international stories. Ability to manage multiple complex priorities under pressure while maintaining composure. International development, humanitarian aid, or global issues experience strongly preferred. Success Factors
