Degree in area of expertise for teaching

Specific Responsibilities of Teaching Position:

To plan and deliver lessons according to Scheme of Work using a variety of learning activities.

To create and conduct assessments according to departmental schemes of assessment and produce reports which meet the required standards in a timely fashion

To regularly assess student performance, provide constructive feedback, and design appropriate evaluations to monitor progress and identify areas for improvement.

To collaborate with colleagues and contribute to a positive and collaborative work environment, sharing best practices and resources.

Brief Description of SCIE:

UK curriculum high school (Cambridge International AS/AL & IGCSE) teaching through the medium of English to mainly Chinese students preparing for overseas universities.

We also run an AP stream since 2025, hence there are some opportunities for teachers interested in AP teaching in various subjects.

Subject Department Introduction:

In recent years, the English Department has evolved to now replicate a standard British High School structure. The Department consists of 25 full-time teachers. Our 2025/26 intake, (UK Year 10), will prepare for IGCSE Language and Literature over two years. Our senior students prepare for Oxford International AQA in Language and Literature. Another option for students is an extended time 2-year AS English Language and Literature course. English teachers at SCIE also have opportunities to utilize and extend their special interests beyond the mainstream curriculum. Student-enrichment groups and English-related clubs are features of the College.

Over the last two years, SCIE English students have achieved CAIE ‘Top of China’ and High Achievement’ awards in AS and AL Literature and Language. We are looking for strong English teachers with lower and upper Secondary experience with an aim to build on these successes.

Working week: Monday – Friday 07:50 – 16:40 (with 07:30 start Mondays and early finish 15:00 Fridays)

Normal contact teaching time – 24 x 40-minute periods per week (approx. 50% timetable)

Personal time – 6 periods per week fixed in timetable when do not need to be at work.

Extra – Curricular Activity – 1 hour per week ECA after school (16:30 – 17:30)

CPD – large range of professional development available both online and face-to-face.

Holidays – 1 week for October China National Day holiday, 2 weeks Christmas holiday, 3 weeks Chinese New Year holiday, Chinese public holidays, mid-June to early August Summer holiday.

Pastoral care is at the heart of what we do at SCIE. All classroom teachers have a role to play in taking care of the whole student promoting their safety, sense of belonging and their wellbeing during their time at the college.

Form tutor role – most classroom teachers will be required take on a form group of approximately 20 students. The role includes having regular individual mentoring meetings as part of the timetable, having regular form time with the group as well as teaching a weekly PSHE lesson. As the main point of contact for students, form tutors are responsible for getting to know their tutees beyond the classroom. The form tutor role attracts an additional allowance.

Teachers without a form tutor role may be required to take on additional pastoral duties as required.

Pastoral professional development – in addition to annual safeguarding training there are additional opportunities to develop your practice in this area and contribute to whole school pastoral development.

Published fixed salary scale (reviewed annually) based on years of teaching experience and annual progression at SCIE

Application deadline by December 31st 2025 for the 1st Round of recruitment, and online or onsite interview by December/January.

We undertake a straightforward and involved selection process. Applicants can expect to have 2 rounds of interviews, 1st round interview with the Department Head (Head of Faculty and Head of Subject) and the 2nd round interview with the Principal Team.
