is currently recruiting for a
Police Communications Operator (PCO) . Under general supervision, a PCO performs police communications and related clerical work in a central communications center.
The Department of Public Safety is a full‑service police department that serves the UMB campus 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Communications Center operates 24/7 on three (3) shifts, subject to the scheduling needs of the Department.
Primary Duties
Operate emergency telephones, two‑way radios, teletype, telecommunications and computer terminal equipment, closed‑circuit televisions, remote control cameras, alarm, and security systems.
Answer emergency telephone lines and monitor radio communications.
Receive and record information and requests related to police services; dispatch police officers; notify command, supervisory, and administrative personnel about incidents.
Transmit and receive telephonic communications with surrounding local jurisdictions.
Operate specialized communications networking equipment and computer terminals; access restricted law‑enforcement networks.
Obtain, input, and receive data related to police activities such as criminal history, warrants, and vehicle registration.
Monitor radio frequencies and transmissions of the Allied Law Enforcement Agencies, National Weather Service, and Maryland Civil Defense.
Relay information from field officers requesting backup and support services such as crime lab technicians, K‑9 unit, emergency medical services, rescue, and fire equipment.
Maintain manual and computerized logs and prepare complaint control cards and reports.
Monitor safety and security systems; report malfunctions as appropriate and dispatch appropriate personnel to alarm sites.

Qualifications Education:
High School Diploma or GED.
Experience:
Two (2) years of clerical or other related experience.
Other:
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year‑for‑year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Skill in the use of keyboards and office equipment.
Ability to type accurately; to learn emergency communications work; to learn applicable procedures and regulations.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to react calmly, quickly, and decisively in emergency situations.
Ability to obtain, summarize and relay information orally and in writing; to follow oral and written instructions; to write legibly.
Ability to monitor multiple radio frequencies.
Experience or proficiency in dispatching, emergency services, and law enforcement.
Strong communication skills for interacting with emergency personnel and the public.
Knowledge and understanding of public safety standards and practices.
Ability to work under pressure and respond effectively in high‑stress situations.
Relevant certifications or training in emergency dispatch or law enforcement is a plus.
Familiarity with technology related to communication and dispatch systems.
