Job Description As a member of the MSNBC Digital copy desk, the Coordinating Copy Editor is the last line of defense to ensure that our articles, columns, blogs and live blogs are of the highest quality possible. Whether it’s a long feature or a short breaking news blog, we look to the copy editor to make sure coverage is free of errors and typos and has context and clarity. The copy editor plays an essential part in producing compelling coverage that helps expand our growing readership. You will have excellent news judgment, and an understanding of the MSNBC brand, standards, shows and on‑air hosts.
Location: New York City. Represented by the Writers Guild of America East.
Responsibilities
Lead MSNBC’s copy team as head copy editor, coordinating team shifts and schedules, liaising with other editorial leads and maintaining team trainings, professional development and editorial standards.
Edit quickly and thoroughly, sometimes after pieces are published.
Engage in productive dialogue with reporters, editors and managers as needed.
Ensure MSNBC.com’s coverage meets the highest standards of accuracy and clarity.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree or relevant work experience.
At least 7 years of experience in daily journalism as a copy editor.
A strong knowledge of AP style.
Desire to work in a creative, demanding, competitive environment.
Experience with politics and/or opinion journalism strongly preferred.
The position requires enthusiasm, patience and positive communication skills. A successful candidate must be able to quickly edit articles in fast‑breaking situations, and understand the difference in style and tone between an opinion column, a news or enterprise feature, and a live blog. Editors need to work collaboratively with a staff of writers and editors, ranging from industry veterans to early‑career employees.
