The Dallas Morning News has an opening for an Audience Strategist to be a key member of the team responsible for deepening the relationship we have with the community, as well as maintaining the overall presentation and promotion of journalism on our platforms and beyond. This journalist will focus on optimizing stories for publication on dallasnews.com.

The Audience Team is on the front lines of building trust with our readers and connecting those readers with journalism that is urgent, revelatory, aggressive and inspiring – and that matters to them. We are passionate about identifying audiences we’re not reaching yet and involving them in our reporting process. This journalist will prepare stories for publication on multiple platforms, demonstrating an understanding of our audiences. The role requires robust editing skills, strong news judgment, bridge‑building, multitasking, and digital storytelling experimentation.

We are looking for collaborative, fast‑paced digital storytellers who thrive in an ever‑evolving internet culture and digital space. Ideal candidates have strong headline, writing, and editing skills, can shift voice and tone based on the audience, work on tight deadlines, maintain keen news judgment, and communicate effectively independently and collaboratively. Duties include creating engaging social media posts, managing the dallasnews.com home page, monitoring analytics and making data‑driven decisions, improving headlines and story pages, curating newsletters, sending push alerts, aggregating and posting wire content, and collaborating with writers and editors on content promotion.

Responsibilities and duties

  • Take a hands‑on approach to editing stories across digital platforms and display a willingness to create content as needed.
  • Show strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask on deadline.
  • Ensure stories are reported fairly, accurately and thoroughly, with sharp, compelling writing.
  • Display exceptional news judgment with the ability to recognize the digital potential of stories that will resonate with our audience.
  • Build stories with links, tags, SEO best practices, attractive web headlines and multimedia when appropriate.
  • Work with editors to evolve and shape coverage to deepen engagement with our digital audience.

Job Requirements

  • One to three years of experience in editing and/or copy editing.
  • Will work nights and weekends.

Skills

  • Excellent editing, time‑management, planning and prioritization skills.
  • Concrete understanding of SEO best practices and how to optimize a story’s digital presentation, including headlines, links, tags and visual elements.
  • Good news judgment, accuracy, speed, grammatical precision, and a flair for headlines.
  • Adapts quickly to changing technologies and workflows.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with colleagues.
  • Solid understanding of internet culture and the digital space.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, data‑driven environment.
  • Strong drive for innovation and experimentation.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field.
