Position Summary

The Design Coordinator role focuses on coordinating with internal (e.g., CPS Energy Gas, Distribution Engineering) and external (e.g., customer, general contractor, electrician, plumber) stakeholders to design overhead, underground electrical, and gas installations, extensions, and system improvements. The position requires specialized knowledge to ensure new construction requests comply with safety and regulatory requirements while meeting CPS Energy standards for load capacity. The Design Coordinator represents CPSE during customer site visits, provides design insight, and educates customers on project advancement. Responsibilities include managing project interdependencies, accurately invoicing, and maintaining project status documentation.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Conduct field inspections to prepare project sites for construction, including staking pole locations and identifying buried utilities.
  • Complete job sketches and mock‑ups for service and meter sets in compliance with CPS Energy standards.
  • Coordinate with internal construction centers, external agencies, and customers to design overhead and underground extensions and upgrades for various service types.
  • Proactively manage inbound work volumes, estimating time and resources, and prioritizing customer needs to meet project milestones.
  • Apply knowledge of CPS Energy infrastructure to assess project impediments and provide clear, concise solutions.
  • Remediate site encroachments and manage key preparation tasks to align with construction release timelines.
  • Generate accurate CIAC invoicing and communicate alternatives when necessary.
  • Use interpersonal skills to support customers and persuade them of required activities.
  • Navigate CPSE and city data resources to evaluate project requirements against standards.
  • Maintain awareness of project statuses, proactively address delays, and provide up‑to‑date job details.
  • Respect and follow safety policies, scanning work environments for hazards.
  • Encourage safe and healthy work practices.
  • Perform other project activities as assigned.

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

• Ability to meet goals with minimal supervision

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)

• Effective interpersonal and customer service skills
• Experience in customer invoicing
• Valid Texas driver’s license and ability to make field visits
• Ability to work overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, or related field from an accredited university, or equivalent experience in utility‑scale distribution planning or construction CAD/GIS.
  • Knowledge of overhead and underground electric distribution design and construction standards.
  • Experience with Designer/Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Work Management Information System (WMIS), and Customer Information System (SAP).
  • Understanding of single‑phase/three‑phase overhead and underground electric distribution design and construction standards.
  • Familiarity with Downtown Network, gas design, electric service, and line extension policies.
  • Relative experience in supporting utility construction and maintenance.

Minimum Education

High School or GED equivalent with design experience.

Working Environment

Indoor work with computer use, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, phone, multi‑function printer, and calculator. Ability to travel to meetings and training sessions.

Physical Demands

Exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, with occasional walking and standing.

San Antonio, TX
Salary: $120,000.00–$140,000.00
