Library Assistant II

Position Summary
The Library Assistant II will have working knowledge of public libraries’ general purposes, routines, services, books, literature, and media. The incumbent will operate a personal computer with standard software, learn specialized library software systems, and be knowledgeable in basic reference resources and services. The Library Assistant II will understand general office procedures, record keeping, and the principles and practices of public relations. The incumbent must deliver quality customer service to library patrons, establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Example Duties
- Charges and discharges library materials; performs other circulation duties as required.
- Assists and advises patrons in the location and selection of books and other library materials.
- Sorts and shelves books and maintains proper shelf order; assists in weeding the collection.
- Answers patrons’ reference questions, referring more difficult questions to a librarian.
- Explains library policies and services to the public.
- Performs other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Public libraries: general purposes, routines, procedures, and services.
- Library technology and computer applications.
- Principles and practices of public relations and customer service.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Proficiency with standard software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and willingness to learn specialized library software such as KOHA.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public to deliver quality customer service.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications
- Bilingual English/Spanish and bicultural experience and skills are highly desirable.
Experience / Education / Training
- Approximately 2 years of experience performing duties equivalent to those of a Library Assistant I for the Monterey County Library, OR approximately three years performing sub‑professional duties equivalent to a Library Assistant I in another library setting.
- Completion of courses required for an Associate of Arts degree with emphasis in library science, liberal arts, or a closely related field.
Conditions of Employment
- Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license or provide suitable transportation approved by the appointing authority.
- Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during disaster or emergency times. Attend meetings outside scheduled work hours.
- Background review may be required, including review of prior employment, driving record, and criminal convictions.
