VP Communications & Public Relations

Position Summary

Directs and coordinates the development, execution and evaluation of marketing, public relations and communication initiatives for Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, its satellite facilities and the Southampton Hospital Foundation. Ensure the effective integration of these four disciplines to meet annually established strategic goals and objectives.

Collaborates with communication colleagues at Stony Brook Medicine to ensure institutional brand integrity across all service lines.

Responsibilities

Public & Media Relations

  • Leads the development, execution and evaluation of strategic public and media relations plans for SBSH and its satellite facilities.
  • Serves as counsel to senior administrators on public and media relations.

Responds to press inquiries, maintains relationships with members of the media, directs the production and distribution of press releases, and serves as on-call spokesperson for the hospital.

Marketing & Advertising

  • Manages the SBSH brand, in alignment with the SBM overarching brand strategy, ensuring a unified identity for SBSH entities.
  • Leads the development, execution and evaluation of strategic marketing plans for SBSH and its satellite facilities in coordination with SBM system marketing strategy.
  • Coordinates assessments of market position, competitive developments and trends for the East End with SBM.
  • Collaborates with SBM system advertising agency, directing the execution of SBSH advertising strategy in print, radio, Internet, television, and miscellaneous publications and journals, including budget, placement and scheduling. Directs production and distribution of communication materials.
  • Participates in the identification and development of new business opportunities.

Measures the efficacy of marketing & advertising efforts in growing business and market share for SBSH and its satellite facilities.

Communications

  • Leads the development, execution and evaluation of strategic communications plans for the Hospital, and its satellite facilities.
  • Oversees the production and distribution of communications materials, including but not limited to the Hospital’s web site, annual reports, newsletters, brochures, speeches and presentations.

Leads crisis communications planning and response and serves as a crisis spokesperson.

Community & Physician Outreach

  • Leads the development, execution and evaluation of community health and wellness programs/activities for SBSH and its satellite facilities.
  • Coordinates assessments of community health status and the preparation of plans/strategies to meet identified community health needs.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships and working relationships with local and regional health and human service organizations and leaders and represents the Hospital on relevant boards and/or committees.
  • Supervise the work of public affairs, marketing, and communication employees, consultants, volunteers and vendors.
  • Provides guidance, mentoring and training to employees and volunteers.

Conducts annual performance reviews for employees.

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing or a related field.
  • 7-10 years’ experience in planning and managing public relations and marketing programs, preferably in the healthcare industry.
  • Strong conceptual and analytical abilities, as well as strategic thinking skills. Exemplary organizational skills, with the ability to conceptualize, facilitate and coordinate multiple complex projects.
  • Excellent writing and oral communications skills, including presentation skills. Ability to speak credibly as a spokesperson in both print and broadcast media.
  • Strong financial and budget management skills.

Proficiency in MS Office applications.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

As part of employment at Southampton Hospital, there may be occasions when travel to other locations is needed to support operational needs.

Physical Demands

  • Mostly sedentary position.
  • Ability to walk and climb stairs.

Excellent auditory and visual acuity.

Special Notes

  • Stony Brook Medicine is a smoke free environment. Smoking is strictly prohibited anywhere on campus, including parking lots and outdoor areas on the premises.
  • All Hospital positions may be subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary.
  • This position may require the wearing of respiratory protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair.
  • This function/position may be designated as “essential.” This means that when the Hospital is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover, and continue operations at Stony Brook Medicine, Stony Brook University Hospital and related facilities.

Anticipated Pay Range

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBSH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Employee Health Services.
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4‑panel drug screen.
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
