ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Works under the general direction of an assigned manager in the IT Operations department by providing clear, accurate, and user‑friendly documentation that supports the understanding and use of complex technical systems, products, and services. Produces user manuals, installation guides, troubleshooting materials, and other technical content for both internal teams and external customers. Researches, outlines, writes, and edits new and existing content, working closely with various departments to understand project requirements. Independently gathers information from subject matter experts to develop, organize, and write procedure manuals, technical specifications, and process documentation. Works with development and support leads to identify all documentation repositories, revises, edits, and determines the best solution for data compilation and centralized storage. Obtains a deep understanding of products and services and translates complex product information into simple, polished, and engaging content. Organizes and structures content in a way that improves user comprehension and ensures logical navigation. Collaborates with cross‑functional teams, including engineers, software developers, product managers, and designers, to understand and translate complex technical concepts. Edits and proofreads documentation for accuracy, clarity, consistency, and adherence to industry standards and company style guides. Updates existing content to reflect product changes, new releases, and user feedback. Incorporates visual aids, such as diagrams, screenshots, and illustrations, to enhance the understanding of technical information. Selects the most effective medium for the message, whether through online help, video tutorials, or printed manuals. Ensures all documentation aligns with company guidelines and meets the needs of both technical and non‑technical users. Reports on project status and progress, contributing to process improvements. Communicates effectively with stakeholders to ensure documentation supports organizational goals.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL CONDITIONS

Requires the use of general office equipment such as computers, calculators, copiers, and telephones. Requires the ability to communicate both orally and in writing with managers and staff.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is primarily performed in an office. Requires travel to off‑site locations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or a related field with four (4) years of professional experience as a technical writer; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions.
  • Working experience writing documentation and procedural materials for multiple audiences.
  • Working experience improving user experience such as design, UI, helping refine content and create visuals and diagrams for technical support content.
  • The City Charter requires that City Employees must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire.
  • The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the exception of 'first responders,' must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of Employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire. As defined by Tennessee House Bill 105, 'first responder' means paid, full‑time law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel and dispatchers of law enforcement, fire and emergency medical service departments.

COMPENSATION

  • Minimum Salary: US Dollar (USD) 64,207.78
  • Maximum Salary: US Dollar (USD) 93,100.8
  • Pay Basis: Yearly
