Position Information

Position Title: Writing Tutor

Department: Center for Academic Support (CAS)
Appointment: Term, Spring (January - May)
FLSA: Non-Exempt

Job Summary: In the MWSU Center for Academic Support, tutoring is provided to assist students. The main purpose is to provide academic assistance to students through one‑on‑one tutoring or small‑group tutoring in person at the CAS or online via Zoom. Secondary roles include staying up‑to‑date on discipline knowledge and light clerical responsibilities.

We are currently hiring for Writing Tutors for the Spring semester.

Essential Duties

  • Provide academic assistance to students through one‑on‑one tutoring in person at the CAS or online via Zoom.
  • Complete rigorous training the first semester to cover clerical responsibilities, discipline knowledge, course content, and tutoring techniques.
  • Operate the CAS front desk, which includes greeting clients, answering phones, logging clients in and out, and other light clerical tasks.
  • Build on their knowledge foundation by studying materials and completing exercises that further their understanding of the disciplines tutored.
  • Deliver presentations on CAS services to classes upon request and attend outreach events to promote the CAS.

Required Qualifications

  • MWSU Student
  • Degree Seeking
  • Enrolled at least part‑time
  • Must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Recommendation by two MWSU Faculty members
  • Must have earned an A or B in English 104, 108, or ETC 200.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants who received an A in the aforementioned English courses and/or have tutoring experience.

Knowledge in the content area.

Physical Demands

Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.

Additional Demands

  • Possible online tutoring.
  • Must have access to a stable internet connection and a device with working camera, microphone, and speakers.

Tutors are hired based on student demand throughout each semester. Hours will vary and can be up to 10 hours per week.
