Position:

Full-Time 1.0 FTE, 40 hours/week - Santa Maria.

Base Pay Range:

$83,494.00/yr - $163,796.00/yr.

Basic Function:

To act as an instructor for the visually impaired for the Santa Barbara County Education Office, Special Education Program. Responsibilities include assessment and instruction of students, and consultation for parents and teachers.

Responsibilities

Conduct the visually impaired program as established by State and Federal regulations and the Santa Barbara County Education Office.

Conduct specific assessments to evaluate and identify the level and functioning of visually-impaired and blind students, in both academic and non-academic areas, including work with multiply‑handicapped students. Consult with classroom teachers, parents, and other support staff regarding procedures for assessment and results of evaluation.

Provide consultative services regarding overall instructional planning and implementation of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) for students who are visually impaired.

Participate in the design of Individualized Education Programs (IEP) suited to the needs of the student. Develop well‑defined goals and objectives for students enrolled in the program.

Conduct specialized instruction for visually‑impaired and blind students, including, but not limited to, Braille, listening skills, daily living skills, grooming, etc.

Confer regularly with ophthalmologists and nurses for assistance in planning an effective educational program.

Refer students as appropriate to agencies which provide special services, such as vocational rehabilitation.

Work with ancillary groups and individuals, such as transcribers, readers for blind students, counselors and mobility instructors.

Maintain cumulative, specialized records reflecting special progress and performance patterns of each student enrolled in the program.

Periodically evaluate and review each student's performance and skills in relation to pre‑established objectives, and prepare a strategy for integration of students into other programs when appropriate.

Actively participate in in‑service programs, and keep abreast of current clinical, theoretical, and educational research in the profession.

Provide in‑service training to various school personnel in the implementation of programs for the visually impaired.

Serve as a permanent member of the school's Pupil Study Team.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Possession of a valid California special education credential authorizing service in a visually impaired program; verification of CBEST clearance.

Experience and/or training appropriate to fulfill requirements of the position.

Length of Work Year:

186 days/10 months.

Additional Compensation:

$2,000 monthly stipend for mentoring assistance.
