Brief Description The Associate Director, Medical Communications is responsible for development of medical publications, management of publication agencies/vendors, associated budgets, and oversight of internal medical writer‑led projects. The role collaborates with the medical communication lead and the Global Medical Affairs Lead to develop comprehensive strategic publication and scientific communication plans and ensures timely, on‑budget implementation. The position reports to the Medical Communication Head for the therapeutic area.
Essential Functions
Lead publication planning teams and develop/implement comprehensive publication plans in collaboration with the therapeutic area lead and GMAL.
Oversee the development of abstracts, posters, oral presentations, and manuscripts from Jazz‑sponsored trials and research.
Build partnerships with internal stakeholders, including regional and global medical affairs directors, HEOR, RWE, biostatistics, clinical development, Early Development, medical science liaisons, medical information, and publication team members.
Establish strong relationships with authors and external experts.
Manage day‑to‑day interactions with publication agencies and participate in vendor selection activities.
Manage all financial and contractual aspects of assigned projects, including external vendors.
Coordinate publication reviews and integrate reviewer comments.
Ensure all materials are reviewed, signed off, and archived according to Jazz publication policies and procedures.
Review publications for medical accuracy, fair balance, and adherence to Jazz policies and good publication practice.
Ensure all Jazz‑sponsored publications are developed according to Jazz publication policy and good publication practice, including GPP 2022, ICMJE, CONSORT, and other guidelines.
Develop and maintain content for Medical Science Liaison (MSL) teams as needed.
Lead medical communication strategy activities at key medical congresses, including booth panel development, booth materials, meeting summaries, and post‑meeting slide reviews.
Support development of scientific communication plans and oversee execution of tactics both internally and externally.
Provide scientific/medical input into development of commercial strategies.
Develop and expand scientific proficiency in assigned therapeutic area(s).
Develop product expertise for Jazz product(s) under responsibility.
Prepare, analyze, interpret, and summarize data; evaluate study data from tables and listings.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Extensive experience in strategic publication planning and execution.
Strong knowledge of good publication practices and guidelines (GPP 2022, ICMJE, CONSORT).
Experience interacting with authors and external experts; effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
Budget management experience across multiple projects.
Preferred experience managing external agencies.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Understanding of clinical trial research, drug development, GCP requirements, and review of trial data.
Prior medical writing experience preferred.
Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and databases such as PubMed.
Experience with publication management systems (e.g., PubsHub, Datavision).
Description of Work Environment
May require working outside normal hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet business demands.
Occasional public contact requiring appropriate business apparel.
Travel varies; plan on 10‑20%.
Required/Preferred Education and Licenses
Advanced scientific degree (Doctorate preferred: PhD, PharmD, MD).
Minimum 5 years of experience in pharmaceutical medical communications, publications, medical writing, or related medical affairs scientific functions, or as a medical director/writer at an agency; publications leadership in pharmaceutical industry preferred.
Prior oncology experience preferred.

Compensation within this range depends on qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, and other factors. The goal is to ensure fair and competitive compensation aligned with the candidate’s expertise and contributions. Internal equity considerations will also influence individual base pay decisions; this range will be reviewed on a regular basis.
The successful candidate may be eligible for discretionary annual cash bonus or incentive compensation, and discretionary equity grants. The candidate will also be eligible to participate in benefits offerings, including medical, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k) retirement savings plan; and flexible paid vacation.
